c. annu. y BOTTLE STOPPER.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT' OnFic.
CHRISTIAN DORN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO` CHARLES RATH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 715,765, dated December 16, 1902.
Application vled April 21, 1902.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHRISTIAN Donn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bottle-stopper which is provided with a valve designed to prevent refilling of the bottle, the objectof my invention being to so construct such a stopper that any attempt to tamper with the valve of the same by means of a wire or other implement inserted through the stopper will be effectually prevented.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of part of the upper portion and neck of a bottle with stopper therefor constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line o a, Fig. 1.
1 represents the neck of the bottle, in which is inserted my improved stopper designed to prevent refilling of the bottle, said stopper comprising an upper sleeve 2 and a lower sleeve 3, the upper sleeve having a downwardly-projecting iiange 4 and the lower sleeve having an upwardly-projecting flange 5, said flanges fitting snugly one to the other, but not so closely as to prevent rotation of` the upper sleeve independently of the lower sleeve.
The sleeve 3 is mounted in the bottle-neck in such manner as to be incapable of rotation therein, the means adopted in the present instance for effecting this result being a ring 6, of rubber or other elastic material, surrounding the sleeve 3 and tting snugly in the base of the neck 1 of the bottle, although cement or other securing agent may be employed in place of the rubber ring for' thus effecting the connection of the sleeve 3` and the neck of the bottle, if desired.
The sleeve 3 has a central opening 7, which terminates at the top in a seat for the valve 9, the latter being free to move vertically in a valve-chamber 10, formed in the lower portion of the sleeve'2 and normally in freecommunication with a central chamber 1l, formed in the upper sleeve 2, such communication being established through lateral openings 12, formed in the iianges 4 and 5, and lateral Serial No. 103,974. (No model.)
The upper sleeve 2 is mounted in the neck of the bottle, so as to have no vertical movement therein, but so as to be susceptible of a turning movement in said neck, this result being in the present instance attained by means of a ring 15, of rubber or other elastic material, which engages an internal annular groove in the neck and a corresponding external annular groove in the sleeve 2.
The valve 9 defeats any attempt to refill the bottle by pouring liquid into the neck of the same and also closes the opening 7 when the bottle is held in such a position as to permit liquid to flow into the same through the neck.
In bottles of this class attempts have been made to defeat the purpose of the valve by introducing'wires through the openings in the stopper in order to hold the valve away from its seat, and it is the purpose of my invention to prevent any such tampering with the valve.
It will be noted that the openings 12 in the flanges 4 and 5 of the stopper are in a plane which is at a right angle with the plane of the openings 18 in the sleeve 2. Hence it will be impossible to manipulate a wire so as to cause it to pass through both sets of openings, such manipulation of the wire having the eect of turning'the sleeve 2 in respect to the sleeve 3 so as to carry the openings 12 in the flange 4 out of register with the openings 12 in the iange 5, thus closing the valvechamber 10 and preventing any access to the valve 9 therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y1. The combination of a bottle having a chamber in the neck of the same, with a stopper comprising upper and lower sleeves mounted in the neck so that the upper sleeve can turn, the lower sleeve having a valved opening communicating with the bottle, and the upper sleeve having an opening communicating with the upper portion of the neck, the sleeves having engaging flanges i nclosing IOO the valve-chamber, and the upper sleeve and both flanges having lateral openings communicating with the chamber in the neck, the upper openings being normally in a vertical 5 plane diierent from the plane of the openingsinthe flanges, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the neck of the bottle having an internal chamber therein, with a stopper comprising a lower sleeve xedly Io mounted in said neck and having a valved passage communicating with the interior of the bottle and a flange with lateral openings communicating with said chamber in the bottle-neck, and an upper sleeve mounted in the 15 bottle-neck so as to be vertically confined therein but free to turn, said upper sleeve having lateral openings communicating with the chamber in the bottle-neck and having a projecting flange which engages with that of the lower sleeve and has openings normally 2o in register with those of said flange and in a vertical plane different from that of the upper openings, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of z 5 two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN DORN.
