STREET-CAR FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 71 5,285, dated December 9, 1902- Application filed September 3, 1902. Serial No. 122,017. (No modeLl To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Nosnn, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Prague, Bohe mia,Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Car Fenders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to improvements in street-car fenders, and relates more especially to a construction of fender which is automatically actuated by the impact of the person or other object being run against; and the object of the invention is to provide a street-car fender which will operate in such a manner that the person or other object knocked down is safely caught in a net without coming in contact with dangerous unyielding parts and is prevented from falling out of the net again at the sides.
W'ith this object in view the in vent-ion consists of the construction, arrangement, and cooperation of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly set forth in the appended claims.
Reference being had to the accompanying sheets of drawings, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the essential parts of the fender construction in the ordinary position as attached to the front end of a street-car. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on line 5c ce of Fig. 2 in working position, unes sential parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is a front view of Fig. 3.
Between two parallel angle-irons 1,the front ends 2 of which forni guidecheeks,is movably arranged the frame 3, carrying the net a. Within the frame 3 is guided a movable frame b, the front bar of which is provided with a rubber or the like elastic bolster 4, and the other end 5 of ,which is repeatedly bent, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Upon the shaft 6 is secured a double-armed lever c, which by means of its nose 7 retains the net a ordinarily in the retracted position below the body of the car, as shown in Fig. 1. lf,
however, the frame b is pushed backwardly, then the frame part 5 will press against the upper end of the lever c, cause it to rock, and thereby free the net a, which then, under the action of the springs 8, will be shot forward, projecting as shown in Fig. 3.
The buffer-rod 10 is in two parts and hinged at 9, and is provided with the usual louderspring e. It is provided at the hinge ends with noses, which when the buffer-head cl is in the ordinary horizontal position overlap each other and are held in this position by a sliding sleeve 13. The latter is connected by means of a draw-rod 14 with the upper part of the lever c, so that upon the latter turning to free the net a the sleeve 13 is retracted, allowing the butter-head to drop to a vertical position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, thereby preventing the knocked-down person from being injured by the buffer.
ln front of the dashboard is jonrnaled a hollow axle 15, upon which is wound a protecting-sheet g, the free end of which is secured to the rod 19. The hollow axle rides freely upon a fixed axlel 6 and is connected with the latter by means of an interposed coil-spring 17. On either side of the axle 15 guide-rods 18 are provided for the rod 19 and the springs 20, which upon the rod 19 being freed push the latter upwardly, and thereby cause the sheet g to spread out in front ofthe dashboard, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The winding up and spreading out of the sheet g is efected by the movement of the net ct, inasmuch as the rear part 21 is connected with the rod 19 by means of a chain or rope 22, running over roller 23, so that upon the net-frame being pushed back the rod 19 is pulled down and the coilspring l17 causes the sheet g to be wound around the axle 15. At either side of the net a is provided a protecting-flap h for the purpose of preventing a knocked-down person from fallingr sidewise out of the net. The winding arrangement of these aps, the front ends 24 of which are secured to the sliding frame 3, is practically identical to the one described with reference to the protectingsheet g and resembles the roller-shade mechanism.
For moving the net-frame into the ordinary position below the car-body the shaft 25, carrying a drum, is rotated, and a chain attached to the drum and to the net-frame is wound up until the nose 7 of the rocking lever c catches behind the part 21 of the receding frame 3.
The operation of the mechanism is the following: If the frame b hits a person, the impact causes the frame to recede, so that its ICO inner end 5 rocks the lever c, freeing the frame part 2l. The net a now, under the influence of the springs 8, is pushed forward, knocking the feet from under the person and causing him to fall into the net. At the same time the buffer-head drops into a vertical position, and the protecting-sheet g and aps h are spread out.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In street-car fenders, the combination of a movable frame, a net stretched across said frame, springs bearing against the rear end of said frame, a double-armed rocking lever adapted to retain the said net-frame in the ordinary retracted position, a frame movably'arranged on said net-frame and adapted to actuate the upper end of the said rocking lever, and means for retracting the said netframe, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
2. In street-car fenders, the combination of a movable frame, a net stretched across said frame, springs bearing against the rear end 'of said frame, a double-armed rocking lever adapted to retain the said net-frame in the ordinary retracted position, a'frame movably arranged on said net-frame and adapted to actuate the said rocking lever, means for retracting the said net-frame, a buffer-rod composed of two parts hinged together, noses at the hinge ends overlapping each other, a sleeve riding upon the buer-rod and a rod connecting the said sleeve With the said rocking lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In street-car fenders, the combination of a movable frame, a net stretched across said frame, springs bearing against the rear end of said frame, a double-armed rocking lever adapted to retain the said net-frame in the ordinary retracted position, a frame movably arranged on said net-frame and adapted to actuate the said rocking lever, means for retracting the said net-frame, a buffer-rod composed of two parts hinged together, noses at the hinge ends overlapping each other, a sleeve sliding upon the said buffer-rod, a rod connecting the saidi sleeve With said rocking lever, a protecting front roller-sheet and side roller-flaps, adapted to be spread out, upon the frame carrying the net being shot forward, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
