UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID TOWVNSEND, IRA D. TOWVNSEND, AND GEORGE B. TOWNSEND, OF
ORAN GEVILLE, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED PORTABLE ENGINE AND SAWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 714,837, dated December 2, 1902- Application filed July 19, 1902. Serial No. 116,206. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID TOWNsEND, IRA D. TOWNSEND, and GEORGE B. TOWNSEND, citizens of the United States, residing at the village of Orangeville, in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Portable Engine and Sawing -Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined portable engines and sawing-machines.
The Objects of the invention are, first,to provide an improved construction of combined portable engines and sawing-machines which are strong and rigid when in use, convenient to operate, and conveniently transported from place to place; second,to provide an improved combination portable engine and sawing-machine which shall be rigid and steady when in use without the necessity for blocking the same; third, to provide an improved construction of combination portable engines and sawing-machines which is adapted to fold for the purposes of transportation; fourth,to provide an improved feed-table and feed-gage for machines of the class described.
Further objects will definitely appear in the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of our invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation view of our improved combination portable engine and sawing-machine, the folding adjustments of the same being illustrated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front elevation view of the structure appearing in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation View looking from the right of Fig. 2, the adjustment of the feed-table being indicated by dotted lines.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, E represents the forward part of a portable engine.
A is a framework, which is secured to the forward part of the engine E by bands 11 it about the same.
A is the frame of the sawing-machine. This frame is secured to the supporting-frame A by the hinges f, so that it is adapted to swing up and down thereon.
A is a cross-bar on the frame A and is adapted to rest on the ground when the machine is in use, so that the frame acts as a brace to hold the same rigid.
The shaft B is supported in suitable bearings on the frame A. Secured to one end of the shaft B is a belt-pulley B and on the opposite end a suitable saw. A belt B is provided to connect the pulley B to the fly-wheel O of the engine.
Supported on the pivoted arm 0 is a pulley or roller O, adapted to rest upon the belt B" to put suitable tension on the same. It is found in practice that the weight of the pulley or roller is sufficient to apply the necessary tension to the belt to serve as a practical belt-tightener, although, if it is desired, a spring may be added or belt-tightening devices substituted.
Carried by the frame D, which is secured to the base D by hinges a a, is a feed-table D. The feed-table is thus supported so that it will rock toward and from the saw, as is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. A rod e is secured to the frame D, and the opposite end is arranged to slide back and forth through a block 1' on the frame A to limit the motion of the feedtable. The wood to be sawed is placed upon the table and the table rocked backward to bring the wood into contact with the saw.
Supported in suitable bearings on the frame A is a rock-shaft c. Adjustably secured to this rock-shaft by suitable set-screws, so that it may be adjusted back and forth upon the same, is a bracket (Z. On the end of the bracket d is a gage-plate d. The gage d is supported in line with the table D when the same is in its outward position. The bracket d, being adjustably secured to the rock-shaft 0, may be adjusted as desired to gage the length of the wood sawed.
As it would be objectionable to have the gage d contact with the end of the wood while the same was being sawed, as it would be liable to cause the wood to bind or pinch the saw, we provide means for automatically swinging the gage out of contact with the wood as the table is swung backward to bring the wood into contact with the saw. A rod 17 is secured to and adapted to rock back and forth with the table D. This rod is connected to the arm 0 of the rock-shaft c by the link I), so that as the table is rocked backward the gage (1 will be thrown forwardly out of contact with the wood.
When it is desired to transport the machine, the rod b is detached from the link I) and also the rod 6 detached from the table D, when the frame A may be raised upwardly against the head of the engine and the table D, swung around in front of the same and the parts secured by any suitable means. The whole is then in a compact and convenient position for transportation.
We have illustrated and described our improved combined portable engine and sawingmachine in the form preferred by us on account of its economy in manufacture, lightness, and durability in use. We desire to state, however, that it is capable of considerable structural variation without departing from our invention.
While we have illustrated and described the several parts as applied and adapted to a combined portable engine and sawing-machine, we are aware that some of the parts are adapted and desirable for use in other relations, and we desire to be understood as so claiming them.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
