WOOD-SAWING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM M. Znvr MERMAN, of Lancaster, in the county ofLancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVood-Sawing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in form of an inverted V, and providedat its upper end with a bearing 2 for the shaft 3 carrying the saw 4:. The two members of each end frame 1, are connected by braces 5, and the two end frames 1 are connected by the braces 6, and the members of each end frame are further connected by the tracks 5 on which the carriage 6 is mounted to travel. These tracks 5* are horizontal and parallel, and each projects at both ends beyond its end frame 1, and each is provided at its front end with a bearing for the rock shaft 7. Rock shaft 7 is provided at its ends with the crank arms 8 to which the pitmen 9 are pivotally connected, the rear end of said pitmen being secured to the carriage 6 The carriage is simply a rectangular frame of a size to receive and support a log of wood, andprovided at its front end with a lip 6 which latter forms a stop for the log and operates to hold same properly on the carriage. The carriage 6 is mounted on two wheels or rollers 10, both of which are preferably grooved or flanged so as to assist in holding the carriage parallel with the saw shaft and prevent any binding of the carriage or any lateral movement of the carriage that could cause the log being sawed to bind against the saw.
The saw 4 is secured to the end of shaft 3 in a plane slightly beyond the adjacent end of the carriage 6", so that the log will be severed close up to the carriage.
By the construction above set forth, it will be seen that the carriage is supported on the rollers and pitmen, the rollers taking the weight and the pitmen operating to maintain the carriage in its approximately horizontal position and also assisting in maintaining its parallelism with the saw shaft.
In the operation of the apparatus a log of wood is placed on carriage 6 with one end projecting into the plane of the saw 4;. By pressing on the log the operator not only holds the latter in place on the carriage, but forces the latter forwardly and the projecting end of the log against the saw. After the end of the log has been severed the carriage is returned by a slight pull,
after which the log is shifted endwise and the operation repeated.
The saw shaft is provided with a pulley 11 by which it may be coupled up by a belt to any source of power.
Instead of mounting the carriage on rollers 10 as shown, it may be mounted on runners as shown in Fig. 2, and instead of mounting the crank shaft in the tracks, it
may be pivotally mounted in the ends of the pitmen, and the, crank arms pivotally connected to the tracks as shown inFig. 2.
This portable device, is extremely simple in construction, is cheap to manufacture and the manner of supporting the carriage at two points only, renders it easy to operate.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described withp out departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but
Having fully described my' invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is 2- In wood sawing machine, the combination with a frame comprising two inverted V-shaped end members connected together, a shaft journaled in the upper ends of said members and asaw on said shaft, of a track secured to each end member and projecting at the front and rear beyond the same, a carriage mounted on the tracks in rear of the frame, each end of the carriage being supported on a single track engaging member, a pitman adjacent each end of the carriage and projecting forwardly and a rock shaft journaled in the tracks adjacent the front ends of the latter and provided with arms to which the front ends of the pitmeii 10 are pivotally connected.
