PORTABLE SAWING-IVIACHINB SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed September 10,
economies in time, labor, and motive power` may be secured.
The invention consists of a circular-saw mounted on a sliding carriage, which is capable of being moved forward and backward on a supporting-frame, combined with mechanism for gigging the saw, and with a boiler and engine, and mechanism for conveying power from the engine to the saw, all permanently mounted on a truck, so as to be easily transported and moved.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved device with parts broken away to exhibit other parts. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my trough designed for supporting small logs or 4timbers for sawing.
The frame of this device is composed of the main longitudinal timbers A A, framed into corner-posts B B, which, in turn, are framed into the wagon-holsters C C. Cross-timbers D D, framed into the posts B B, and braces D' D', secured to the front corner-posts, complete the frame.

The frame is strengthened by a truss composed of pieces of scantling F and rods F', secured in place, as shown.
On the lower edges of the timbers A A are rigidlysecured iron guide-bars b b. G represents a rectangular sliding-carriage furnished with iron ears c c, that engage over the bars b b in such a manner that the said sliding carriage can slide forward and back thereon. This sliding carriage G supports in suitable 5o journal-boxes, d d, the saw-arbor H', carrying the circular saw H and main pulley H2, and the idler-pulleys Il, one on each side of the Patent No. 329,002, dated October 2:7, 1885.

On the forward extended ends of the timbers A A a shaft, K, suitably journaled, as shown, carries a small pulley, K', and `the iiywheel K2, and in standards L L, that are secured in the angles of the timbers A A, and front posts, B B, is journaled a roller, M, provided with a crank-handle, M'.

direction the carriage and saw will be gigged back to disengage the saw from the log or timber being operated upon.
On a platform or frame extension, P, properly secured to the rear end of the device is fixed a boiler and engine, P', with ily-wheel P2 and driving-wheel P3.
The driving-belt Q passes from the drivingwheel P3, under the rear idlerpulley, I, then up over the saw driving pulley H2, thence under the front idler-pulley, I, and thence around the pulley K', and back over the engine-wheel, as shown.
The idler-pulleys, it will be seen, hold the driving-belt down upon the saw-pulley H2 in such a manner that the full power of the bel shall be transmitted to said pulley. i The track B, which is used for supporting heavy timbers, being in position., as shown, with a log (not shown.) upon it, the engine is put in motion and the saw thereby revolved. The operator then taking hold of the crank M' turns it so as to bring the saw in contact with the log, and continues to turn said crank in the same direction, feeding the saw to and into the log, with whatever force may be requisite, until the log is cut, then he turns the said crank in the opposite direction, and thereby gigs back the carriage and saw in position for another cut.
When small logs or timbers are to be crosscut, the track R is removed, and the trough pulley H2, are also carried, so as to freely rcand when the said crank is turned in the other- A rope, N, is made fast to the carriage G,
S (shown in Fig. 2,) is substituted therefor to hold the timbers up to the saw. Y The trough S is provided with a transverse slot, h, through which the saw moves when operating. l
This machine is adapted not only for the simple cross-cutting of logs and timbers, but by placing another saw on the saw-arbor, and adjusting the two saws as far apart as desired,` bolts of equal lengths can be cut.
This machine is so light and so arranged as to be easily transported and adjusted in place, requires `no especially skilled nor hard labor to operate it, as the operator has only to attend the crank, and is capable of doing its Work with great accuracy and speed.
I am aware that there are machines for sawing and other purposes possessing one or more mechanical devices similar to certain of those shown in my constructiombut I am not awarethat the effective combination of operating parts herein shown and described has ever before been made. f
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A portable sawing-machine consisting of a supporting-frame, a driving-belt, a pulley at each end of 4said frame over which said belt passes, a sliding carriage, a saw and saw-arbor vcarried thereby, a pulley secured to one end of said frame, a roller at the other, a rope secured to said carriage and passing around said pulley and roller, and means for imparting motion to said roller, substantially as and for the purpose specific 2. In a portable sawing-machine, the combination, with a supporting-frame mounted on a truck, a carriage carrying a circular saw and saw-arbor and sliding on guide-bars attached to said frame, and means for transcircular saw I-I and saw-arbor H', carried by y said carriage, pulleys H2 K', and idlers I I, shaft K, carrying said pulley K, roller M, journaled in one end of said frame and provided with crank M, the pulley O, attached to the opposite end of said frame, and the rope N and belt Q, all combined, arranged, and operating substantially as hereiny shown ,and described. y
4. In aportable crosscut-sawing machine,
lthe combination, with the supportingframe provided with guide-bars, of asliding-carriage carrying a circular saw and provided with ears engaging said guide-bars, the roller M, journaled in said frame and provided with crank M', pulley O, secured to the frame vat the end opposite said roller, and the rope N, secured to said carriage and after passing around the pulley Ohaving its ends secured to said roller, substantially as and for the purpose described.
