Be it known that I, ROBERT FRANZ WERK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Clipper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a clipper for cutting the outside fibers from cordage of any sort, which end I attain by a peculiarly-constructed instrument involving two knives or sets of knives which are relatively movable in concentric circles, the cord bleing passed through the center of such Acirc es.
This specilication is a specific description of two forms of the invention,while the claims are definitions of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
y in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a sectional view of the-invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modiication thereof.
The tool, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises two tubes a and b, the latter being tted to turn freely within the former and the interior surface or bore of the tube a being tapered to correspond with the similar formation of the exterior surface of the tube h. If desired, the tubes ct and b may be formed, respectively, with interior and exterior cavities, (indicated at 0,) which cavities serve to place the adja cent surfaces of the tubes out of engagement, thus reducing the friction attending the relative movement thereof. The outer orstationary tube a is held fast in a clamp d, forming a part of a bracket or other suitable support e. The bracket e has an arm e', which extends to the axial center of the tubes a and h and carries a tubular set-screw f, connecting with the inner tube b to hold the tube b in proper position with respect to the tube a. The two tubes having their engaging surfaces tapered throughout the entire extent of such engagement may be caused always to fit snugly together, and thus all wear incident to the operation ofthe tool may be readily taken up. The set-screw fserves not only to hold the tubeb in place, but also to take up the wear thereof and of the tube a. A pulley gis fastened to the tube h rearward of the tube a, by means of which pulley the tube b may be revolubly driven.
The outer or front ends of the tubes a, and b are formed, respectively, with blades 7?, and
t', the edges of which are juxtaposed, so that readily be seen that as the tube h is driven such fibers as project from the surface of the cordage will be shorn therefrom. In this connection it will be observed that the knives h and t may be of any'number desired and that they constitute two knives or sets of knives having relative 'circular movement, thus adapting them to the peculiar nature of the Work to be performed.
In Fig. 2 l have shown a form of my invention in which the inner tube h", carrying the knives fi', is held stationary by a clamp d' on a bracket e2. The outer tube a is mounted to turn on the inner tube and carries knives h', working with the knives i'. The outer surface of the tube b is tapered to lit the correspondingly-shaped bore of the outer tube a', and this tube a is held to turn on the tube b and may be properly adjusted by means of a flanged annulusf, the flange of which engages a flange a2 on the tube a. This annulus f is threaded on a collar k, which is fastened to the tube b by means of a set-screw or other means. A set-screw may also be provided for locking the annulus f to the collar. A pulley g' is secured on the tube a', by which to drive it. In this form of the invention the "tubes a' and b are provided with annular interior and exterior cavities, (indicated at c,)
which are similar to the cavities c, before described. The matching taper of the tubes a and b' extends throughout the length of the engagement of said tubes with each other, and by the adjustment of the partsf' and 7e the tubes may be readily moved on each other to keep them snugly together, as previously explained, and account for any wear between them.
Various changes inthe form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit IOO and scope of my invention. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a bracket, a tube held rigidly thereby and provided with a knife, a second tube arranged to turn in the Iirst tube and provided with a knife working with the first knife, and a tubular set-screw held by the bracket and engaging the second or revoluble tube.
2. The combination of a bracket, a tube held rigidly therein, said tube having a tapered bore, and a knife on said tube, a second tube revolubly fitted within the first tube and tapered to conform thereto, the second tube also having a knife, and a hollow setscrew carried in the bracket and engaging the butt-end of the second tube.
3. The combination of two relatively revoluble tubes fitted one within the other, each tube bearing a knife, a tubular set-screw engaging the butt-end of one tube, and means for imparting a rotary movement to one of said tubes.
4. The combination of two tubes supported axially coincident to each other and relatively revoluble, said tubes being axially adjustable and each tube having a knife, means for turning one tube, and means for adjustably holding the tubes at the desired relative axial position. v
5. The combination of two tubes fitted one within the other and arranged relatively revoluble, said tubes having tapering engaging surfaces extending throughout theflength of the interengagement of said tubes, means for adjustably holding said tapering tubes engaged, and a knife on each tube.
