Be it known that I, J OSEPHK. SHARPE, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans for Pneumatic Stackers, of which the following is a specification.
In the operation of pneumatic stackers of IO that type in which the straw is introduced into the blast mechanism at a point substantially at the eye of the fan difficulty is experienced by reason of the tendency of heavy charges of straw to choke the fan, and thus I 5 reduce the carrying capacity.
The object of my present invention is to produce a structure in which the capacity of the eye of the fan shall be large, yet the construction such as to compel the greater mass of material to pass directly through the eye into the discharge-spout without being drawn into the fan-casing proper, where it would be engaged by the fan-blades and drawn by them around through the casing.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical section on line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the discharge-spout shown to one side of the-machine, and Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 with the opening adjacent the dischargespout substantially on the medial line of the machine.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a fan-casing of ,any usual form provided with a dischargespout 6 and an eye 7 in one side. Immediately adjacent the dischargespout 6 the eye .7 is enlarged, as at 7'. Located at the centor of the casing is a fan-shaft 8, which extends only a-short distance into the casing and is provided with arms 9, which preferably lie close to the bottom of the casing and are provided at their ends with blades 10. Extending downward from the eye of the fan towithin a short distance of the arms 9 is a segmental annular flange 11, which lies substantially concentric with the fan-shaft and extends entirely around the casing, except at a point immediately adjacent the discharge- 50 spout, where it is discontinued. In operation the straw is discharged into the hopper 12 and by it directed into the eyes 7 7 through which it passes. That material which falls into the supplemental portion 7 or near this portion passes immediately into the discharge-spout 6, while the balance of the material is carried around by the arms 9 until it comes adjacent the opening in the annular flange 11, when it passes into the discharge-spout, the said flange preventing the straw from passing into the fan-casing proper.
A fan -casing constructed in accordance with my invention produces a blast mechanism of large capacity which cannot be choked, because the straw does not come in contact with the fan-blades.
I claim as my invention- .1. The combination, with a fan-casing having a discharge spout and an eye leading thereinto, of a depending segmental annular flange arranged in said eye and extending the greater portion of the distance toward the bottom of the casing, said flange being interrupted immediately adjacent the dischargespout, and a fan consisting in part of a plurality of blades each of which lies wholly within and is arranged to traverse the annular space between said depending flange and the wall of the casing.
2. The combination, with a fan-casing having a discharge spout and an eye leading thereinto, said eye being substantially concentric with the fan-shaft throughout the major portion thereof but being enlarged immediately adjacent the discharge-spout, of a segmental annular flange depending from said eye and extending the greater portion of the distance toward the bottom of thecasing, said flange being interrupted immediately adjacent the discharge-spout and the enlargement of the eye; and a fan, consisting of arms extending beneath the adjacent flange, and fan- 5 blades carried by said arms and arranged to lie substantially wholly within and to traverse the annular space between the depending flange and the wall of the casing.
3. A fan-casing consisting of top, bottom [00 and connecting external shell, forming a substantially cylindrical chamber and dischargespout leading therefrom, the top thereof having an eye formed therein substantially concentric with the axis of the casing, and a depending flange extending around said eye and extending the major portion of the distance toward the bottom of the casing, said flange being interrupted immediately adjacent the discharge-spout.
4. A fan-casing consisting of top, bottom and connecting external shell forming a substantially cylindrical casing and a dischargespout leading therefrom, said top having formed therein an eye the major portion of which is substantially concentric with the axis of the casing but having an enlargement immediately adjacent the discharge-spout, and a flange depending from the substantially concentric portion of the shaft through the major portion of the distance toward the bottom of the fan-casing but interrupted adjacent the discharge-spout and the enlargement of the eye.
