UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI AMY SHURIOK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SANDPAPER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,247, dated November 25, 1902.
Application filed October 26, 1901. $erial No. 80,037, (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMY SHURICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city,State of New York, have inventeda Sandpaper-Holder; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation .to sandpaperholders-adapted to be attached to wearing-apparel to be used for striking matches; and it consists of the novel construction and arrangement in its parts, as hereinafter described.
The object of my invention is to provide a sandpaper-holder adapted to be attached to the sweat-band of ahatior inner side of a coat or vest or at any convenient place on the trousers or any other suitable or appropriate place on the wearing-apparel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of ornamental nature, simple construction, and possessing all necessary qualities of durability and cheapness of construction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sandpaper-holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional viewof the sandpaper-holder. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the sandpaper-holder cut on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa transverse sectional view of the sand paper-holder out on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the sandpaper-holder with the paper removed.
The holder consists of the blank 1,said blank being a single piece of sheet metal and being generally oblongin shape in the body portion. At each end of the blank is formed in the metal a point 2, and approximately at the said points may then be clenched against the under side of the fabric, thus firmly securing the holder in position. The body portion of the blank 1 is provided with the slits 4 4, which extend parallel with the long sides of p for.
the said body portion. The strip of sandpaper 5 is slippedat its edges through the slits 4 4, the extreme edges of the said paper passing under the edges of the long sides of the body portion in the manner shown in Fig. 4. The points 3 3 are bent down and clenched in the manner shown in Fig. 3, thus preventing the strip of paper 5 from slipping laterally through the retaining-slits 4 4. The sandpaper 5 is exposed along the middle surface along itsentire length and may be used for striking matches upon. The middle portion of the body portion 1, between the slits 4 4, may be depressed in a manner as shown in Fig. 2, and the edges of the portion 1 on the outer sides of the slits may be elevated, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
It will be observed that by bending out the points 3 3 from the position as shown in Fig. 3 the sandpaper may be removed from the holder and a new piece substituted there- Thus when the paper is worn out or is dampened it can be easily and readily supplanted by a new piece. The exposed sides of the body portion may be used for engraving the name of the owner of the article of wearing-apparel upon, and thus the device will serve as a marker. As shown in Fig. 3, it will be observed that the extreme ends of the points 3 3 pass under the edges of the middle portion of the body portion 1. Thus whena match is struck against'the exposed face of the paper 5 the pressure on the middle portion of the body portion to a certain extent is relieved by the extreme ends of the points 3 3, thus preventing the said middle portion from being bent or forced out of shape.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the character as described, consisting of a single piece of sheet material forming a body portion, means for attaching said body portion to the apparel, said body portion having slits cuttherethrough, points located at opposite sides of the body portion and adapted to be bent down under the edges of the body portion, the extremeends of said points passing under the middle part of the body portion and bearing against the under I sides of the said bent points coming in conside of the same, whereby the said points tact with the edges of the paper retaining the serve as braces for the body portion, the said same in position.
slits and the said points being so arranged AMY SI-IURIOK. whereby a strip of paper may be slipped Witnesses:
through the slits and its edges passing under JAMES STIKEMAN,
the under edges of the body portion and the ANDREW A. GRAY.
