SHRBNE' FOR GASKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,713, dated November 18, 1902.
Application filed September 23, 1901. Serial No. 76,146. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL STUMPF, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shrines for Caskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shrines or lids for burial-caskets; and the object of my invention is to divide the shrine or face-lid into separable sections, which may be folded back or laid over to the sides of the casket.
lo this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all 'the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a casket, showing my improved shrine with its parts thrown back and to the sides in order to expose the interior. the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the appearance of the top of casket when the parts of the shrine are closed upon it.
The drawings representmyimproved shrine as applied to any ordinary form of casket, as a, and as attached thereto.
The shrine is divided into four sections, of which two, I) b, are hinged to the upper forward edges h 72. of the casket and are adapted to open outwardly along the sides thereof, while the two inner parts 0 and d are hinged together at a middle point, and the part c is hinged to the forward edge of the lower part of the casket-lid Ct. The parts a and dare arranged to fold backward and downward over the lower part of the casket-lid, the part (1 Fig. 2 is a plan view of forming a prop to support the part a when the latter is thus inclined backward, and its extremity rests upon said lid. plate e is placed on the under surface of the part c and is exposed to View when that part is set back along the lower lid 0.. The inner edges of the side sections b b are beveled, with the faces of the bevels upward, while the outer edges of the parts a and d are beveled, with their bevels downward, and the extremity of the part dis furnished with means for fastening it at that point 9 to the casket atf. When the sections are down and the part d is locked at f, the whole shrine is securely fastened together by the locking of the bevels on the sections in their engagement with each other. This method of arrangement of a shrine in parts, as shown, thus serves the double purpose of readiness in opening and disposal of its sections and of so locating the name-plate as to make it conspicuous. A further advantage is in the means of securing the parts in place by one look or fastening only.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A shrine or face-lid for burial-caskets, having in combination with a casket-body, side sections beveled on their inner edges and hinged to the upper edges of the casket, and a two-part lid beveled on its outer edges and hinged to the lower cover of the casket, and provided with means for locking it to the casket, as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 14th day of September, 1901.
EMIL STUMPF. Witnesses:
HENRY MEYERS, I. J. LENNoX.
