To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHAN J. BBOMAN, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Sterling, in the county of iVhiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shears; and I do declare the following to be a full,clear,and exact description of the invent-ion,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to shears, and pertains more especially to that class thereof which are employed for heavy work or where it is desirable to out several thicknesses of cloth at once, as in a tailoring establishment.

The chief object of my invention is to provide a shears the cutting powers of which are greatly increased with no corresponding increase in the amount of force necessary to be exerted to operate the same. This is accomplished by the novel manner in which the handles are attached to the blades of the shears, as will more fully appear in the following specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention with the blades closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof with the blades open and one of the handles removed. Fig. 3 is an edge view of my device.

Two blades 1 and 2 are pivotally secured to one another at their rear ends, as at a. Each of such blades is provided with an enlarged portion 3, each of such parts 3 having on its inner face a groove 4, such grooves being shallower at their ends than at their centers, as shown in dotted linesin Fig. 3. Handles 5 and 6 are pivotally secured to the blades 1 and 2, respectively, as at b and 0, such handles being pivotally secured to each other at their point of crossing, as at (1. Each blade and the handle thereto attached are substantial counterparts of the opposing blade and handle. handles being too closely drawn together and grasping the blades so tightly as to interfere with the operation thereof. The blades 1 and 2 are provided in their enlarged portions with similar recesses 9 to permit of the pivotal connection of the handles to each other, as shown. Each handle is provided with a threaded perforation in which is seated a threaded pin 10, adapted to engage the groove at of the opposite blade.

The operation of the shears is substantially the same as in those of the usual form, except that a greater amount of power is exerted through the leverage obtained, resulting in the cutting of heavy fabrics or several thicknesses thereof with greater ease. The purpose of the grooves 4 and pins 10 is to render the operation of the blades and handles more steady and prevent any twisting or giving thereof, although the device is complete and under ordinary conditions will operate satisfactorily without the addition of these parts.

In the operation of the shears the contact of the blades is Weakest at either end of a cut, and to aid in keeping such contact uniform the grooves 4 are made shallower at the ends, resulting in a forcing of the handles farther apart and consequent drawing together of the blades at each end ofa movement of the blades. The shoulders upon the handles are not essential features of my device; but they not only give a more finished appearance to the tool, butassist to some extent in forcing the blades together.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A pair of shears having a pair of blades pivotally connected at their extreme rear ends, and a pair of handles having crossed pivotal connection with each other, and pivotal connection with the blades in front of the crossing-point of such handles, substantially as shown.

2. A pair of shears, comprising a pair of blades having pivotal connection with each other at their extreme rear ends, and provided with semicircular enlargements near such pivotal point; and a pair of handles having crossed pivotal connection with each other, and pivotal connection with said blades front of the crossing-point of such handles, said handles being provided with shoulders adapted to engage the enlarged portion of the blades, and means for increasing the contact of the blades at each end of a out thereof, substantially as set forth.
