COMBINED PUTTY KNIFE AND POT HANGER.
(Application led Feb. 6, 1902,)

UNITED STATES ATnNT Trios.
COMBINED PUTTY-KNIFE AND POT-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 713,231, dated November 11, 1902. Application led February 6, 1902. Serial No. 92,787, (No model.)
To afZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CONRAD B. -MANsBAoH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Campello, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Putty-Knife and Pot-Hanger, of which the fol- A lowing is a specification.
This invent-ion relates t a combined puttyknife and pot-hanger; and it is adapted for use as an ordinary putty-knife for puttying surfaces to be afterward painted, and it is also useful as a device for supporting a paintpot or other device during the operation ofV painting the roof or outside Walls of a house, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of the improved putty-knife and pot-hanger. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 in Fig. l, showing in dotted lines the pivoted portion of the handle swung outward when -in use as a pot-hanger. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device shown in use as a pot-hanger, and Fig. 5 represents a detail perspective view of the hinged portion of the handle.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents the blade of a putty-knife as usual, to which is secured in a suitable manner the handle portion B, to which is hinged at C the metal bar or plate D, preferably secured to the handle portion E, as shown.
To the lower portion of the handle portion E is secured an extension c, which may be secured to the part E or made integral therewith, as may be most practical or convenient, without departing from the essence of my invention.
The metal plateD is provided'at its upper free end with pronged or pointed projections d d for a purpose as will hereinafter be more g fully described.
In practice I prefer to secure to the blade A a projection A for the purpose of serving as a frictional locking device relative to the prongs cl CZ when the handle is closed andthe device used as a putty-knife.
In Fig. 4, F represents the outer Wall of a wooden building, on which G G are the clapboards, as usual.
In using the device as a pot-hanger I place the upper end of the blade A between two of the clapboards G G and swing the handle portion E and its metal plate D to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and full lines in Fig. 4 and insert the prongs d d into one of the lower clapboards G, as shown in Fig. 4, after which I suspend the bail 7i of the pot I-I on the handle extension e, as represented in Fig. 4, in which position said pot H is properly held suspended during the operation of painting the wall of the building.
I have shown the pot-hanging device as applied to a vertical wall; but it is equally useful on slanting roofs by inserting the end of the blade A between the shingles of the roof in a similar manner to that shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus fully described'the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- The herein-described combined putty-knife and pot-hanger, consisting of a putty-knife A, secured to a handle portion B, and pivotally connected to a metal plate D, having a pronged end d, and having secured to it a handle portion E, provided with an extension e, projecting beyond the lower end of the handle portion B, and adapted to serve as a pothanger substantially as herein set forth and described.
Intestimony whereof Ihave affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CONRAD B. MANSBACH.
