To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID ELMER WER'IS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Grants Pass, inthe county f Josephine and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Changeable-Address Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a changeable-ad? dress holder for trunks, valises, and other kinds of baggage.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination vot the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part'of this specification, in which similar characters 0f reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device as applied to a trunk. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section upon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking downward. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary inverted plan View showing certain details of the locking mechanism. Fig. `4 is a section through the line 4 4 ot Fig. 1 looking in direction of the arrow, andFig. 5 is an elevation showing a slight modification in the form of plate used.

Upon the frame 1 of a trunk, valise, or similar article' to be identified are mounted plates 2 3, which may be secured thereon by screws 4 5. The plate 3 is provided with a large aperture 6 o f any desired form, but preferably rectangular, and with a smaller aper ture 7, preferably of circular form, the two apertures communicating with each other, as shown. An interchangeable check 8 is provided with a semicircular head 9, connected thereto by means of a neck 10, the arrangement being such that the main body of the check engages the larger rectangular aperture, while thesemicircular head engages the circular aperture 7. A circular aperture 11 is provided in the plate 2, as shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4. Mounted upon the semicircular ,head 9 by means of acentral pivot 13 is an eccentric disk 14, provided with an integral tongue 12, which serves as a latch, which may be caused to register with the neck by merely turning the cam upon the pivot. The semicircular head 9 is proseri'nno. 104,641. on modem shown to better advantage in Fig. 3, in which Athe normal or locked position of the cam is indicated in full lines and the abnormal or unlocked position is indicated in dotted lines.

As the semicircular head 9 occupies only about one-half ofthe aperture 7, the eccentric disk may be operated by the tingers when the screw 16 is loosened for the purpose.

In the modification of the plate shown in Fig. 5 the screws 17 and 18, 19 and 2O are used for securing the plate in position, and the slot 21 is employed for engaging a strap, so that the device may be suspended instead of being secured by screws. In other Words, the traveler may use his election whether to secure the device upon the article to be idaentiIied either by'suspending it from the strap or by the use ot screws. The modified form of plate necessary for this purpose and shown in Fig. 5 is numbered 22.

The address is placedupon the label 23 and covered be an isinglass or mica plate 24. The beveled end 25 of the plate 3 engages the beveled undercut 26 of said plate.

My invention admits of a great variety ot modified formsand different usesand may be employed in a great diversity of relations,

which will readily suggest themselves to persons skilled'in the art.

It will be observed that the inner plate and the outer plate 3 when secured together constitute a'single member provided with an undercut edge to be engaged by the latch 12 of the cam, as indicated in Fig. 3, and with an undercut edge 26,`to be engaged by the beveled edge 25.

To remove the check 8, the screwl is loosened, and the semicircular head 9 israised by the finger-nail. The check thereupon easily comes out.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Achangeable-address holder comprising IOO a plate provided with apertures communicating with each other and each provided with an undercut, a check for engaging said apertures and provided with members for engaging said undercuts, and means controllable at will for changing the position of one of said members relatively to said plate.

2. Achangeable-addressholder,comprising a longitudinal plate provided with a large aperture disposed substantially in the middle thereof and provided with a relatively small aperture disposed adjacent to said large aperture and communicating with the same, a check provided with members for engaging both of said apertures,and means controllable at will for locking said members within said apertures.

3. Achangeable-addressholder-,comprising a plate provided with a large aperture of any desired form and also provided with a relativelysmall aperture of circular form, each of said apertures having an undercut edge, a check provided with a member for engaging said undercut edge of the larger of said apertures and-also provided with a semicircular head for engaging said aperture of circular centrically pivoted upon said last-mentioned.
