HOLDER FOR TICKETS, CARDS, &.C.
SPEQEFCATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,560, dated November 4, 1902. Application led November 25, i901. Serial No. 83,508. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ABBoT AUGUSTUS Low,
a citizen of the United States, `residing at:4 Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, and State ot- New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Tickets,
make and use the same.
My invention is applicable as a holder for all kinds ofcards and similar articles to be carried upon the person, particularly commu-A tation-tickets which are to be punched from time to time, as railroad and ferry commutation-tickets and the like.
The object of4 my; invention is toaiord a` simple, cheap, and convenient holderin which such ticket or card may be placed and protected while exposing it for purposes of identification and for punching or cancellationin part; and the invention consists in the special construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed specifically. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis an elevation of my improved holder, showing a ferry commutation-ticket in place. is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section upon plane of line 3 3, Fig. l; Fig. 4, a transverse sectionupon plane ot' line 4 4., Fig. 1; Fig. 5, an` elevation of the auxiliary stiffener. Fig. 6 is a modification ot' the auxiliary stiffening-plate. Fig. 7 is a partial section, on an enlarged scale, taken on plane of line 3, Fig; l, showing the retaining.
spring in detail.
My improved holder consists, essentially, of two duplicate plates A A', between two opposed edges of which is interposed a spacingue B Of L Shape, the three parte being rigidly secured together by any convenient or well-known means, as by riveting, as indi-` cated in the drawings.` The L-shaped4 fillet*` A A at the other end a2 and side o3 are formed with coinciding recesses or openings r r, which expose portions of the edges of the card Fig. 2-
d or ticket placed in the holder. The outer ends of the tonguesaf, which constitute the side walls of these recesses r r, are rounded off, so as to present the least possible resistance when brought into contact with extraneous objects. The recesses r rare so formed and situated as to coincide'with and expose the particular `numerals imprinted on the card orticket which the holder is designed to accommodate for the purpose of rendering such numerals visible and accessible for the purpose of punching or cancellation. It will be 'seen that one-half of the numbers on the ticket are exposed at a time. When the first half of the numbers have been canceled, the ticket is reversed in position within the holder, thereby exposing the remaining number for cancellation.
The central portion of each plate A A is formed with an opening a5, through which Lthe body of the ticket may be observed and by means of which the ticket may be conveniently manipulated in introducing it into or removing it from the holder.
In order to effectually reinforce and support the ticket within `the holder, I propose to use an auxiliary stilEening-plate P, formed with a series of recesses p,coinciding to those in the plates A A', as shown in Fig. 5. This auxiliary plate may be utilized and adapted for advertising purposes or as a calendar, memorandum-tablet, or for like purpose, its printed side being exposed through one of the openings a5, while the ticket is exposed through the other. One or more fiatumetallic springs s are arranged between the plates A A to holdthe ticket 'l and the stiiiening-l A.plate P in place, with their opposed edges against the inner side of the spacing-illet B. The edges of the plates are preferably bent inward to formlips l Z, which hold and lock the ticket T and stiffener P in, the holder, the elasticity of the plates being suicient to admit ofthe insertion ofthe ticket and stiffener one at a time between the said lips Z Z. `It will thus be seen that I afford'ampleprotection for the ticket or like article, while exposing it freely and without manipulation or protrusion both to observation and cancellation.
The auxiliary stiening-plate P may, if desired, be pivotally attached to one corner of the holder, as indicated in Fig. 6, in which IOO case it may be quickly and conveniently swung out for the purpose of inspection or as readily returned to its normal position Within the holder.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the duplicate plates A, A', each formed with a series of coinciding recesses i", r, on one side edge and one end edge, and a spacing-fillet B, interposed between and secured to the said plates A, A', at their remaining unrecessed edges, for the purpose and substantially in the manner set forth.
2. The combination of the duplicate plates A, A', each formed with a series of coinciding recesses r, r, upon one side edge and one end edge, a spacing-fillet B, interposed between and secured to the said plates A, A', at their other unrecessed edges, and a stiEening-plate P, for insertion between the plates A, A', and formed with recesses p, p, which coincide in position with the recesses r, 1^ in the plates A, A', for the purpose and substantially in the manner described.
3. The combination of the duplicate plates edge, and a spacing-fillet B, interposed between and secured to 'the said plates A, A', at their remaining unrecessed edges, the stiftening-plate P, for insertion between the plates A, A' and a flat metallicy spring s, interposed between and secured to one of the duplicate plates and the Illet B, for the purpose of holding the stiiiening-plate P', and a ticket T in place, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.-
ABB OT AUGUSTUS LOW.
