' Be it known that I, PETER `BACI-IER, a citiin the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented i certain new and useful Improvements in Cupola-Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and` exactdescription of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawiugs,.making a part of this specification, and to the iigures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing one division or hinged section open, also illustrating a portion of the base broken away.i Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig.` 3 is a view showing portions of the hinged sections of the furnace. Fig. 4 is a View showing a portion of one of the hinged sections ofthe furnace.
The present invention has relationlto cupola-furnaces; and it consists in the differ-4 ent parts and combinations of parts herein-` after described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In. the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the supportingposts or pillars, which are supported upon suitable foundations, such as 2, and are formed of a height to correspond substantially with the extreme height of the hinged sections ofthe furnace. Upon the top or upper ends of the posts or pillars 1 is located a topplate 3, to which top plate is connected the fixed dome-section 4, said dome-section extending a short distance below the bottom or under side of the plate 3. To the dome-section 4 is attached in a con. venient and well-known manner the furnacestack 5.
At a suitable distance from the bottom or lower ends of the lposts 1 is located the furnace base-plate or frame 6, which is providedwith `the usualcenter opening 7, which center opening is for the usual `purpose and of course is to be closed when the furnace is to"` be brought into use by the ordinary hinged` members 8, or, if desired, a sliding plate may take the place of the hinged members 8. This construction being common in furnaces of this class needs no speciic description here;
but in order to carry out the perfectworking Serial No. 98,492. (No model.)
of the furnace it is necessary to provide means for closing the bottom of the furnace' proper. Upon the base-plate 6 are located the hinged sections 9, which hinged sections are convexeconcavo and the inner or concave side thereof lined with suitable fire-brick, such as are used in the manufacture of furnaces ofthis class.
-The sections 9 are hinged together by means of suitable hinges, such as 10, which of course must be of sufficient strength to properly hold the hinged edges of the conveXo-concavo sections together. Tothe opposite side of one of the hinged sections 9 are attached and securely fixed any desired number of staples, such as l1, and upon the other hinged member are secured the corresponding number of hasp bars 12, which hasp bars receive the staples when the hinged sections are brought together to produce a continuous cylindrical shell and are securely held in such 'position by means of suitable keys 13.
In the drawings the `keys are shown located in the staples 1l; but before the hasps are brought into position to properly close the hinged sections 9 it willbe understood that the keys 13 must be removed from the position shown in the drawings and the keys placed in the staples after the hasps have `been brought into such a position that the staples will extend through the slots. For the purpose of providing a means for easily moving the hinged sections 9 the base-plate 6 is provided with the channel or groove 14 and in which channel or groove are located any desired number of antifriction-balis 15, which antifriction-balls are located directly under the flanged plates 16, which flanged plates come and go with the hinged sections 9, and for the purpose of providing the means for supporting the hinged sections now when they are open the base-plateis provided IOO porting-post is located directly under the bottom or lowerend of the melting-pot 19, and said post is supported by the bar or plate 21, which comes on top of the base-plate 6 and of course above the hinged members 8, so that when thehinged members are permitted to fall, as illustrated in the drawings in Fig. 1, the melting-pot will be supported; but of course it will be understood that the hinged sections 8 are not to be released when the melting-pot contains metal either in a solid or a melted condition.
For the purpose of preventing the meltingpot 19 from tipping the hinged sections 9 are provided With the inward-projectingstays 22, which are fixed through the hinged sections 9 and are formed of such a length that when said hinged sections are closed the inner ends ofthe stays 22 will come againstJ or nearly against the melting-pot 19. It will be nnderstood that the stays 22 are to be formed of the same material as the melting-pot 19, this kind of material being used for the purpose of preventing the stays from becoming displaced or destroyed during the melting process.
By the use of my improved furnace I am enabled at one aud the same time to melt two kinds of metal-for instance, steel and iron or brass and iron-owing to the fact that there is no direct communication between the melting-pot 19 and the intervening space between the outer portion of the melting-pot and the inner portions of the hinged sections 9.
Heretofore it has been diflicult to place a Y melting-pot in a cupola-furnace owing to the fact that the furnace proper must be turned down or the top removed in order to place the melting-pot in position. By my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to easily remove the outer shell of the furnace, or, in other words, to open the same,` so as to provide room for sliding the melting-pot into position, and when the meltingpot has been brought into position the outer wall of the furnace can be quickly brought into its relative position and the furnace is ready for use. The upper portion of the furnacethat is to say, the dome 4 and the plate 3 is supported independent of the walls of the furnace proper and that when the hinged sections 9 are turned upon their hinges the dome and its supporting-plate, together with the stack of the furnace, remain in their fixed position and are never disturbed for any purpose whatsoever so far as the Working of the furnace is concerned and the changing of the melting-pot.
It will be understood that the space between the melting-pot 19 and the outer shell of the furnace proper can be utilized in the same manner that is employed at the present time-that is to say, the ore, coke, and other materials can be placed in position around the melting-pot 19 and when the metal is melted it is drawn from the furnace in the` usual manner; but when the metal' in the melting-potis ready to be withdrawn the plug is removed and the metal allowed to iiow through the delivery pipe or spout 23, which delivery-pipe is formed of such alength that it will pass through the opening 24, which opening is located in one of the hinged sections 9.
For the purpose of delivering the proper blast any desired number of blast-pipes, such as 25, are employed, which blast-pipes are of course connected to a fan or fans in the usual manner. The blast-pipes are connected to the annular channels 2G and 27, which channels may be provided with the usual inspecting-apertures 28.
For the purpose of conveying material into the melting-pot 19 the spoilt 29 is provided, which spout is located at a point so as to properly charge the melting-pot.
For the purpose of providing means for skimming and removing foreign substances that may accumulate upon the top of the Inaterial contained in the melting-pot a pipe 30 is provided and properly connected, which pipe extends through a suitable aperture, such as 31, formed in one of the hinged sections 9.
It will be understood that the ordinary closing-plugs are to be employed to close the outlet-apertures of the melting-pot and the outer melting-chamber, which are operated in the usual manner and are held in place in any common and Well-known Way. lt will also be understood that the tloor upon which my improved furnace is to be located should be so formed that the dierent apertures for removing the molten metal can be of easy access, this being done by slauting the iioor so as to allow room foi-the proper operation and working and save any lifting to any extent of th'e molten metal. This being common needs no special description here.
The blast- passages 32 and 33 are inclined downward through the hinged sections 9 and are so formed for the purpose of preventing the material from passing outward and for the purpose of protecting the inner ends of the blast-passages.
The brick forming the lining for the hinged sections 9 should be set over or extended beyond the inner ends, so that in charging the furnace or by the dropping of the material in the furnace it Will not be caught by the inner ends of the blast- passages 32 and 33.
For the purpose of properly holding the brick constituting the lining' of the hinged sections 9 any desired number of metallic strips 34 are employed and are located at such intervals as to properly retain the brick and prevent the same from becoming detached during the time the hinged sections 9 are swung upon their hinges. These bars are supported through the metal casing of the hinged sections 9.
The upper channels 27 are for the purpose lof providing a blast to the upper portion of cupola between the hinged sections 9 and the IIO IZO
melting-pot 19, and for the purpose of regulating the blast dampers 27?*` are provided,
which dampers are operated in the usual manner. y p y For the purpose of holding the hinged members 8 in a closed position a post S is employed, and when it is desired to have an upblast or a-draft grates may take the place of the hinged members 8, this simply being a' change from the hinged members 8 to the hinged grate members.
For the purpose of supplying coke and other material to the cupola between the melting pot and the hinged members 9 suitable doors, such as 10, are used. illustrated one of these doors; but it Will be understood that any desired number may be employed.
It will be understood" that the stays 22 and the posts 20 are to be formed of the same material as that used in theconstruction `of the melting-pot, which materialis what is knownas black lead or .graphite By my peculiar construction I am enabled to use the melting-pot and melt the metal contained therein bythe heat generated in the cupola proper between the hinged sections or members 9 and `the outer periphery 4of the melting-pot and that the melting-pot may be changed any desired number of times, this being a great advantage, owing to the fact thatdierent kinds of metal may be melted at one andthe same time and each kind independently melted.

In a furnace of the class describedabase plate and a top plate'spaced` therefrom, said top plate providedAwith a dome-sectionheld inielevation independent of the furnace section or sections or wall, and the ,furnace sectionsor wall adapted to be moved laterally between the base-plate and the dome-section,` and a melting-pot located within the furnace- Wall and spaced therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
