FURNACE FOR SMELTING ORES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 228,818, dated June 15, 1880. Application filed March 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DIEDERICH W. J ANSEN, of Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Furnaces for Smelting Ore; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of a vertical central section of my improved smelting -furnace. Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof above the arch; and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail, showing passages for the withdrawal of the slag.
This invention has relation to improvements in means for smelting lead, zinc, and silver ores.
The object of the invention is to devise a new and improved furnace for the smelting of lead, zinc, and silver ores, but more especially for distilling zinc.
The nature of the invention will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the foundation or arch of the furnace, constructed of fire-brick supported by stone, and having on its top the retortB, constructed of the best fire-brick, and closed at top by a lid or cover, a, of similar material. The bottom of the retort is closed by a metallic slide, S, covered with fire-brick, and movable endwise between the retort and arch A, so that the former may be opened at bottom, and the gangue discharged therefrom through an opening in the crown of the latter into a suitable receptacle.
The retort and its foundation or arch are built up together solidly, and the latter is surrounded by a concentric fire-brick structure, 0, snugly inclosing the upper part of the retort and forming therewith an annular chamber, b. The structureG is provided with three openings, 0 0, arranged the one above the other, at the top and bottom of the structure, respectively, as shown, through which project nozzles 01 d, extending through the walls of the retort, and at its lower edge with the rectangular holes k, closed at pleasure by fireother nozzleof the same description as the nozzles d d is used between the nozzles above set forth, its function being precisely that of the nozzle d.
The nozzle 61 passes through or is provided with a condenser, to precipitate the metallic fumes.
At the bottom of the outer wall of the combustion-chamber I) and in the wall of the retort are the registering-openingsl 1, also closed by a removable tile designed to be used to discharge the slag from the retort in the event of the slide being stuck fast, so that it cannot be drawn out.
D indicates a generator arranged at a suitable distance from the furnace-chamber b, and connected therewith by a feed-pipe, Gr, extending through the wall of stack 0. In this generator is produced the gas by means of which the retort containing the ore is heated,its supply being regulated by suitable cocks in the pipe G.
By the employment of combustible gas in smelting ores great expense is saved and equally good results attained.
This smelting-furnace is peculiarly suited to the production of zinc; but itwill be clear that it can be used with excellent results with silver and lead ores.
It is well known that retorts having surrounding combustion chambers, removable covers, and discharge-pipes have been used before 5 also, that smelting-furnaces heated by gas are common; hence I do not claim such devices, broadly.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a smelting-furnace, the combination, I
with the foundation-arch A, its retort B, and its slide S, of the stack 0, surrounding the said retort, and forming therewith a combustionchamber, 1), the gas-generator D, and a pipe,
G, leading therefrom into said chamber, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the furnace G and the retort B, inclosed Within the same, and mounted upon the arch A, of the tile-covered slide S and nozzles d d, leading through the walls of the furnace and retort, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of an open-bottomed retort, B, mounted upon an arch, A, and provided with a sliding bottom, S, of the stack 0, inclosing said retort, and provided with draftopenings 7c, and the spouts or nozzles d 6", extending through the stack and retort-Walls, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the foundation-arch A, having an opening in its crown, the retort B, erected on the said arch around said opening, the stack 0, surrounding said retort and forming therewith the combustion-chamber b, a generator supplying combustible gas to said chamber, the pipe d, extending through the upper part of the stack and retort, and the pipe or pipes d at the lower part of the stack and retort and discharging the slag from. the latter, and the slide S, closing the lower end of the retort and the opening of the arch, and allowing the gangue to be discharged from the retort through said opening into a receptacle, substantially as specified.
