UNITED STATES LEO RUMBOSKI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES S. LONGHURST, JR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
a PUMP CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 712,461, dated October 28, 1902. Application filed February 3, 1902. Serial No. 92,417. (No inodel.)
To all whom it may concern: the elastictube F, that leads to the cylinderv Be it known that I, LEO RUMBOSKI, a citiof the pump A; zen of theUnited States, residingin NewYork, The pump connection E is composed of a borough of Queens, and Stateof New York, cylindrical socket e, the interior wall of which 5 have invented certain new and useful Imis made cylindrical adjacent to its closed end, provements in Pump Connections, of which beveled or tapering at its middle portion, and the following is a specification. interiorly screw-threaded adjacent to its open This invention relates to an improved pump .end. Into the interiorly-threaded end of the connection between afoot or hand pump and socket e is screwed a centrally-perforated cap IO the valve-nipple of a pneumatic tire, said f, which is provided with a'perforated exteconnection being designed with a view of fa-L riorly-threaded nipple f, that is adapted to cilitating the pumping action of the hand or; be screwed into the interiorly-threaded end foot pump by opening the valve of the nipple of the valve-nipple D of the tire B. On the in a positive manner by the action of the con-' nipple f of the screw-capf is placed a gasket I5 nection in place of opening said valve by the: f of leather or other suitable material, by
action of the air compressed in the pump, which a tight connection between the screwwhich is equivalent to a. loss of power when capand valve-nipple is secured when the nipexpanding a tire; and for this purpose the llI-i ple of theformer isscrewed into the nipple vention consists of a pump connection which of'the valve D. At the interior of the socket 7o 20 comprises a socket provided with interiorly-l e is arranged a plunger g, which is loosely fitbeveled side walls, a spring cushioned plunted into-therupper cylindrical portion of the ger-in said socket, a perforated screw-capfor socket e. The plunger 9 is provided with a closing the socket and guiding the stem of stem g, of triangular cross-section, that is the plunger, and an eXteriorly-threaded shank guided in the bore of the nipple f of the screW- 25 on the cap for making connection with the cap fisaid plunger being cushioned bya helivalve-nipple on the'tire; and the invention cal spring g which is interposed between consists, further, in certain details of conthe plunger and the inner face of the cap f, struction and combinations of parts, which as shown clearly in Figs.' 3 and 4. When will be fully described hereinafter and finally the socket e is screwed in the nipple of the o pointed out in the claims. valve D, the stem of the plunger is in line In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is with the stem of the nipple-valve, .so that as a side elevation of my improved pump consoon as the air is compressed by, the action nection, showing it in position for use with a of the piston in the pump A the plunger is pneumatic tire and afoot-pump. Fig. 2 is'a pushed downward against the tension of its 35 side elevation of the same, drawn on a larger spring, so that its stem acts directly on the scale and shown as connected with the valvestem of the spring-cushioned valve cl of the nipple of a tire. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical nipple D and forces the valve in inward dicentral sections of the connection, showing it, ,rection, so that the air under pressure is suprespectively, in normal position and in posiplied to the interior of the tire. The down- 40 tion when acted on by the air compressed in ward motion of the plunger g is produced by the pump; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section the action of air compressed in the pump p on line 5 5, Fig. 3. at each downstroke of the piston, whereby Similar letters of reference indicate correthe plunger is moved into the tapering porsponding parts. tion of the socket and its stem into the bore 45 Referring to the drawings, A represents a of the nipple f of the screw-cap, so that the foot or other pump forcharging pneumatic air under pressure can freely pass through tires; B,'a pneumatic tire that is attached to the; valve D into the tire, as shown by the I i. a rim 0; D, the valve-nipple of the tire; D, arrows in Fig. 4. With the upward stroke the valve of the pneumatic tire, and E the of the pump-piston a suction is created and I00 50 pump connection, the ribbed shank e of which the plunger returned into its normal position,
is connected in any approved manner with so as to release thereby the stem at of the valve of the tire, so that the valve is returned by its spring into normally closed position. The next downward motion of the pump-piston again supplies air through the socket and valve into the tire until the same is expanded to its full extent. When the tire is expanded, the connection E is unscrewed from the nipple of the valve and the usual screw-cap applied to the same. Whenever the tire is to be expanded again, the screw cap of the valve-nipple is removed and the connection E screwed into the nipple D, as shown in the drawings, when by the downstrokes of the piston in working the pump the plunger is operated, and thereby the valve of the tire positively operated, so that the valve is opened under the action of the compressed air and the so-called sticking of the valve overcome and an easier pumping action obtained, as the extra force required for open ing the valve under the pressure of the air is dispensed with, and by the positive action of the connection a quicker and more effective charging of the tire obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A pump connection for pneumatic tires, consisting of a cylindrical socket connected with the pump, a cap screwed into the end of said socket, having a screw-threaded nipple, and a spring-actuated plunger in the socket, the stem of the plunger being guided in the bore of the screw-cap and nipple, substantially as set forth.
2. A pump connection for pneumatic tires, consisting of a socket provided with a nipple, said socket being formed of an upper cylindrical, an intermediate tapering and a lower threaded portion, a screw-cap provided with a nipple screwed into the end of said socket, and a spring-actuated plunger in saidsocket, the stem of said plunger being guided in the bore of the screw-cap and nipple, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a pump connection consisting of a socket provided with a nipple at its closed end, a screw-cap at its lower end provided with a nipple, and a spring-cushioned plunger the stem of which extends into said nipple, with a spring-cushioned valve on the tire provided with an exteriorly-threaded nipple for connection with the nipple on the screw-cap, for producing the positive opening of the valve by the stern of the plunger under the action of the compressed air delivered into the socket, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a pump connection consisting of a cylindrical socket provided with a nipple, a screw-cap screwed into the end of the socket and provided with an exteriorly-threaded nipple, and a spring-actuated plunger located in said socket and provided with a stem extending into the nipple of the screw-cap, with a valve in the tire provided with an interiorly-threaded nipple for the nipple of the screw-cap so as to bring the stem of the plunger in line with the stem of the valve of the tire, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEO RUMBOSKI.
