Description

"No.'7l2,224. I v Patented Oct. 28, I902.

SIDE BEARING. (Application filed. Mag. 31, 1902.)
I}, Hil H'I' W c W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. WILLIAMS, JR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHICAGO RAILIVAY EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORA- TION OF ILLINOIS.
SIDE BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 712,224, dated October 28, 1902. Application filed March 31, 1902. Serial No. 100,731 (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, GHAnLEs H.'WILLIAMS,
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in side bearings, the object being to simplify the construction of ant-ifriction-bearings of the character described and at the same time reduce the cost ofmanufactors of said bearings to a minimum.
With these objects in View my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, all as will hereinafter be described, and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a casting provided with the usual perforated lugs 2 for the passage of securing-bolts. This casting receives a cap 3 at its upper end, said cap being secured in position by appropriate means and forming, with the casting 1, abearing for the antifriction-rollers 4 and 5. These antifriction-rollers, as shown, preferably have coned faces to accommodate the movement of the body-bearing, the cone of said faces being determined by the distance of the side bearing from the king-pin of the truck. As the rollers in operation travel at different circumferential speeds and as in service but one of said rollers might bein operation while the other remains idle, I preferto divide the axle of spindle 6, on which they are mounted,
and form heads 7 on the inner contiguous ends of said parts of the spindle, said heads being received and operating in an enlarged chamber'formed by the cap-piece and casting 1.
I am aware that many minor changes in 0 the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in'the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as-new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a side bearing for railway-cars, the combination with a bearing, of a divided spindle jonrnaled therein, and rollers arranged on the ends of said divided spindle; substantially as described.
2. In a side bearing for railway-cars, the
combination of a bearing,of a divided spindle,
and coned rollers on said spindle at each side of said bearing; substantially as described.
3. In a side bearing for railway-cars, the combination with a bearing, and coned rollers arranged on each side thereof and whose axes of rotation are coincident; substantially as described.
4. In a side bearing for railway-cars, the combination with a bearing, a divided spindle mounted in said bearing, coned rollers arranged on the ends of said spindle on each side of said bearing, and a cap-piece on the bearing for holding the spindle in place; substantially as described.
5. In a side bearing for railway-cars, the combination with a bearing, of a cap-piece, a divided spindle journaled in said bearing, rollers on the outer ends of said spindle, and heads on the adjacent ends of said divided spindle; substantially as described.
'6. In a side bearing for cars, the combination with a bearing, and rollers of different diameters mounted on each side thereofand capable of independent rotation; substantially as described.
7. In a side bearing for cars, the combination with a bearing, of a divided spindle mounted therein, and rollers on the outer ends of said spindles whereby said rollers are capable of independent rotation; substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof Ihereunto affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of March, 1902.
