Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CAROLUS ARNOLD, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
ILLUMINATED WATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,112, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed January 14,1902. Serial No. 89,675. (No modelJ To all 1071,0111, it may concern:
Beit known that I, CARoLUs ARNOLD, acitizen of the State of Hamburg, residing at Weidenallee 59, Hamburg, in the German Empire,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Closable Watchcases with a Small Incandescent Lamp in the Lid and with a Receptacle for an Electrical Reservoir, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved receptacle in which pocket-watches are to be kept during the night, in connection with a source of electric light in such a manner that on opening the lid of the receptacle an electric circuit is closed and light thrown onto the dial of the watch by an incandescent electric lamp.
Further objects of the invention are to simplify and cheapen the construction and to render more efiicient, serviceable, and durable in operation devices of the kind referred to.
\Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaption of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings.
I will now proceed to describe my invention more fully, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a transverse section through a receptacle constructed according to my present invention. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the receptacle according to Fig. 1, with the lid fully open.
A receptacle (1, made of any suitable material and of any desired shape and dimensions, possesses in its lower portion a a chamber in which the source of electric light, suitably a dry battery Z), is housed. AbOV6 the dry battery I) the pocket-watch is placed on a suitably-shaped rest a which may be coated and decorated as desired. I In the lid a of the receptacle an incandescent electric lamp 0 is arranged in such a manner so as to throw light onto the dial of a watch when placed in the receptacle. The incandescent electric lamp 0 is introduced into the electric circuit of the source of electric light I) by suitable connecting-wiresas,forinstance,illustrated in Fig. 2; but it must be observed, and this constitutes part of my invention, that when the receptacle a is closed the electric circuit is broken and no light emitted by the lamp. However, on opening the receptacle by pressing onto the button 6, which pushes a locking-spring cl of suitable construction out of engagement with a notch a in the lid in the well-known manner, the electric circuit is closed by the contact of the said lockingspring d with a metal plate constituting the second terminal, and in consequence light thrown onto the dial of the watch. When closing the receptacle by pressing the lid a down and in engagement with the lockingspring 01, the button 6 will be released and the electric circuit broken again.
In order to render the lower portion a of the receptacle a easily accessible, I may hinge the center portion a provided with the rest a for the watch, thereto, as shown in Fig. 1.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with asupporting-casing for a pocket-watch having an electric battery inclosed in said casing, an electric incandescent lamp operated by the said battery on opening the lid of the casing, substantially as described and shown.
2. In combination with a supporting-casing for a pocket-watch having an electric battery inclosed in said casing, an electric incandescent lamp carried in the lid of the casing, and means for operating the said lamp by opening the lid of the casing, substantially as described and shown.
3. In combination with a supporting-casing for a pocket-watch having an electric battery inclosed in said casing, an electric incandescent lamp carried in the lid of the casing; said electric lamp introduced in the electric circuit of the battery; and a locking-spring for the lid of the casing, in connection with an outwardly-projecting push-button adapted to close the electric circuit on opening the lid, substantially as described and shown.
4. The combination, in a pocket-watch support, of a lower casing housing the electric battery, a center casing hinged to the former provided with a suitable rest for the watch, a lid hinged to the center casing, an incandescent electric lamp carried in said lid and electrically connected with the battery, and means for operating the electric lamp by opena push-button adapted to press the lockingspring out of engagement with the notch in the lid, thereby enabling the latter to be opened, and at the same time pressing the locking-spring against the contact-plate, whereby the electric lamp is operated, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony'whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0f-two witnesses.
' OAROLUS ARNOLD.
