CLOTHES-FRAME.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,120, dated February 26, 1850.

To @ZZ 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, HUMPHREY KEMPTON, of Fairhaven, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved-Portable Clothes-Frame; and I ldo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, making a part of this specifica tion, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view and Fig. 9., a vertical section.

Similar letters indicate like parts in both the figures.

A, is a vertical cylindrical mast, rising from the base pieces J, J, in which it is secured in such a manner that it can be readily detached.

B, C, D, E, F, are collars placed upon the mast one above another, and resting on shoulders on the same, as represented in the drawings.

G, Gr, are a series of arms-more or less in numberjointed to the lower collar B.

H, H, are a series of bars jointed to the outer extremities of the arms G, G.

I, I, are a series of rods connected to the collar E, by means of the cords 79, p; or they may be jointed to the collar if deemed expedient. Metallic point-s project from each extremity of the rods I, I, which are inserted into a series of holes in the periphery of the collar E, and into holes in the inner edges of the bars H, H, near their upper extremities, when the frame is spread out as represented in Fig. l. A series of stay cords n, n, having their inner extremities secured to the collar F, at the top of the mast, and their outer extremities made fast to the bars I-I, H, sustain the weight of the rods I, I, the bars H, H, and arms G, G, and preserve them in their proper place when thrown into the position represented in Fig. 1. Pins Z, z', project from the upper surface of each of the collars C, D, to which are secured the inner ends of the series of cords Z, Z, on which the clothing to be dried is suspended; the outer extremities of the cords Z, Z, are connected to the pins j, j, projecting from the sides of the bars After spreading out the frame into the position above set forth, and covering the radial lines Z, Z, with clothing, the cords m, m, are passed around the frame and securedl to the pins Zr, Ze, projecting from the outer edges of the bars H, H, serving to steady and give support to the frame, and also to suspend an additional quant-ity of clothing upon.

When the clothes frame is not required for use, the cords m, m, are detached from the bars H, H, the rods I, I, are detached from the collar E, and the bars H, H, and placed by the side of the mast, the pins proj ecting from their outer extremities being inserted into the holes t, t, in the collar B, the bars H, H, are then folded to the side of the arms G, G, and carried with the arms upward against the mast and secured thereto by means of a strap or cord passed around the whole and confined in any convenient manner; thus bringing the entire clothes frame into a compact and portable form.

The clothes frame is spread out for use in the manner above set forth.

Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my improved portable clothes frame, what I claim therein as neit7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the jointed arms G, G, bars H, H, and rods I, I, with the collars B, C, D, E, F, and the mast A by means of the stay cords a. n, and the cords Z, Z, and m, m, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
