SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,907, dated October 21, 1902.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FAY H. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hydepark, in the county of Norfolk, State of Mas- 5 sachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fliers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation more especially to the pressers of fliers for roving-machines and the like and to the means and manner of combining the said pressers with the pressercarrying arms of the fliers.
The invention consists in the novel and im- I proved construction and arrangement which I will now proceed to describe, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure l is a View in elevation showing a spindle, bobbin, and flier having my invention applied to the latter. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Having reference to the drawings, 1 designates the spindlezof a roving-frame 2, a bobbin surrounding the same; 3, a flier applied to the said spindle; 4, the balancing-arm of the flier; 5, the arm to which the presserfinger is connected, and 6 the boss or nose of the flier.
7 is the presser-finger.
In accordance with my invention the presser-finger 7 is mounted so as to cause it to swing or turn about a center of motion which is located, as indicated at 00, Fig. 1, at a point in the neighborhood of the upper end of the 40 bobbin and also midway or approximately midway radially of the spindle and bobbin, between the periphery of the empty bobbin and that of a full load of roving wound upon the said bobbin. The presser-finger 7 cannot be actually pivoted at the point a: aforesaid midway between the periphery'of the empty bobbin and that of a full load of roving, because this would interfere with the winding of roving upon the bobbin; but I secure the same result, in eifect, by connecting the presser-finger with the carrying-arm 5 therefor pertaining to the flier in a manner which causes the presser-finger to turn or swing about the said point.
The drawings showdifierent ways of carrying the invention into effect. Usually I provide the arm 5 of the flier with a box or tubular guide 51, Figs. 1 and 2, within which a portion 71 of the length of the presserfinger 7 is received. The said box or guide 51 and said portion 71 of the presser-finger are fitted to each other. The said portion 71 is capable of moving endwise through the box or guide 51, and the two are combined in a manner which prevents the presserl-finger from turning around its longitudinal axis. Usually I form the portion of the presserfinger which fits within the said box or guide rectangular in cross-section, the interior of the box or guide being shaped accordingly, although this particular shape in cross-section is not in all cases essential. Other known means may be adopted in some instances, if preferred, for the purpose of preventing the presser-finger from turning around its longitudinal axis. In manyinstances, indeed, special provisions for preventing the presser-finger from turning around its longitudinal axis are not absolutely required, inasmuch as the arc shape of this portion 71 of the presser-finger and of the box or guide 51 will itself prevent the turning movement. I further form this portion 71 of the presser-finger 7 with a curvature, such as is shown in the drawings, the said portion 71 being curved on the arc of a circle of which the center is located at the point as, Fig. 1. As already stated herein, the said point an is located midway or approximately midway between the periphery of the empty bobbin and the periphery of a full load of roving, the distance being measured radially of the spindle and bobbin. The curva ture of the box or guide is struck from the same center. Consequently when force is applied to the presser-finger tending to move it it slides through the box or guide 51 in the direction of its length, its movement with reference to the aforesaid center of motion causing the shoe 72 at the lower extremity of the presser-finger to move toward or from the longitudinal axis of--the spindle and bobbin along an arc of which the center is the center of motion as aforesaid and of which the radius is the line extending from the center of motion a", to the shoe 72. In Fig. 3 the separate cover-piece 54is shown received in rabbets that are formedin the opposite sides of the box or guide and is supposed to be secured by soldering or brazing. In Fig. 2 the cover-piece (here designated 55) is fitted to the opposite sides of the box or guide 51 with dovetailed joints, and after having been pushed into place it is there held by peening along the said joints, clamping thereby the edges of the said cover-piece. In Fig. i the cover-piece 56 is simply soldered or brazed upon the outer edges of the opposite sides of the body of the box or guide, while in Fig. 5 the said cover-piece 57 is similarly secured, but is formed with side flanges 571 571, which embrace the opposite sides of the said body. In Fig. 6 the construction is reversed in this that the side 58is first attached to the flier-arm 5,'while after the presser-finger and the body 59 of the box or guide have been fitted together the edges of the said body are applied and secured to the said side 58.
Various other changes in form and construction are possible to be made without involving a departure from the broad principles of .my invention.
I claim as my invention-- 1. A flier provided with a presser-finger mounted and operating to swing or turn in a radial plane about a center of movement located adjacent the head of the bobbin in connection with which the said flier cooperates in practice, and at apoint intermediate the periphery of. the empty bobbin and the pe- A single or continuous arc-shaped box or guide 51 may be employed, as in Fig. 1, or; the portion 71 of the presser-flnger may be. fitted to two or more sections 52 52, as in Fig. 7. A flier provided'with the arc-shapedbo'x jor guide,and having the presser-finger formed with the curved portion fitting the said box .or guide and movable therein about a-center located adjacent the head of" the bobbin in connection with which the flier is used, and intermediate the periphery of the emptybobbin and the full load.
