CONNECTING-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,732, dated October 21, 1902. Application filed June 2, 1902. Serial No. 109,955. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY M. MCOALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting-Rods, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to connectingrods especially adapted to be used in gas-engines or any other machine provided with adjustable bearings that are ordinarily difficult to adjust.
The object of the invention is to provide a means for adjusting the piston or top brasses of the connecting-rod, said means of ad j ustment being located outside of the piston or cylinder and can be readily adjusted without having to remove any part or parts of the engine to do so.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rod connected to a piston, the said piston being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the rod at right angles to Fig. 1, with parts shown in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a slide used in the rod, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of said slide at right angles to Fig. 3.
The piston-rod 1 is provided at its end with the hollow portion 2, at the base of which the slot 3 passes throughthe said rod. The shank 4 of the slide 5 rests in the hollow interior of the portion 2, said portion being provided at its end with the elongated flange 6, and the said slide 5 being provided at its end with the corresponding elongated flange 7. The bolts 8 8 pass through registering perforationsin the flanges 6 and 7 and through similar perforations in the end plate 9, and the brasses 10 1O surround the pin 11 and form a bearing for the same, the said brasses being interposed between the end plate 9 and the flange 7. The gib 12 is located in the slot 3, as is also the key 13. One edge of the said key 13 is beveled to correspond with the beveled face of the gib 12, as shown in Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that when the key 13 is driven in the side of the said gib 12 will be forced against the end of the shank 4 of the slide 5 and the said slide will be moved toward the piston, when the bolts 8 8 may be tightened and the parts held in these positions. The
set-screws 14: are provided, which are adapted to impinge the key 13 and hold it in its proper place after the parts have been adjusted. The gib 12 and the key 13 being located beyond the endof the piston it will be observed that the brasses 10 10 may be adjusted without taking the engine apart. In case the key 13 and gib 12 should be shaken loose and fall out of their places while the engine is running the piston cannot be disconnected from the rod 1, for the bolts 8 8, passing through the flange 6, secure the end of the portion 2 to the pin 11.
It will be observed with this construction by driving wedge 13 in the slot 3 and against the gib 12 that the shank4 of the slide 5 will be forced out and the inner brass 10 will be forced in proper position against the pin 11. WVhen this is done, by adjusting the bolts 8 8 the outer brass 10 can be drawn to its proper position against the opposite side of the pin 11. Thus the wedge 14 is used for adjusting the inner brass 10 and the bolts 8 8 for adjusting the outer brass after the inner brass has been properly adjusted.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A rod having at its end a hollow portion with a'transverse opening at the base thereof, a slide located in said hollow portion, and a means located in said transverse opening for operating said slide, brasses adapted to surround a pin, "said slide bearing against the inner brass and adapted to adjust the same to the pin, and a means connected to the end of the rod adapted to adjust the outer 9o brass against the pin after the inner brass has been adjusted. 2. A rod having at its end a hollow portion with a transverse opening at the base thereof, a slide located in said hollow portion, and 9 5 a means located in said transverse opening for operating said slide, brasses adapted to surround a' pin, said slide bearing against the inner brass and adapted to adjust the same to the pin, bolts connected to the end [00 of the rod and adapted to adjust the outer brass to the pin after the first said brass has been adjusted.
