IMPROVEMENT IN CONNECTING-RODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,831, dated July 9, 1872- vania.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of an improved connecting-rod.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is an edgc'view of the same, the bolts, lowerstraps, and brasses being removed.

My invent-ion has for its object to furnish an improved connecting-rod, which shall be so constructed that it may take up the wear without having its length changed, and which shall be simple in construction and conveniently adjusted; and it consists in the constructionand combination of the various parts of the connecting-rod, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the rod. B is the long or inner strap which passes around one end and along the side edgesof the rod A. (l is the short strap that passes around the other end of the rod A, and the ends of which overlap the ends of the long strap B. The straps B O are secured to each other and to the rod A by a gib, D, and key, E, which pass through slots or keyholes in the straps B G and rod A. F are the inner and G the outer brasses, that form the bearings for the pins H, and which are held in place by the straps B G. The key D is secured in place when adjusted by a set-screw, I, which passes in through the rod A, and the forward end of which rests against the side of the key E. J is the bolt which passes through the ends of both the straps B O and through the rod A; and K are the bolts that pass through the long strap B and through the rod A. The holes inthe rod A, through which the bolts J K pass, are elongated, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the said rod A and the strap B may be moved in opposite directions upon each other, and still be Secured by said bolts. L is a small T-shaped block which is interposed between the inner brass F and the end of the rod A, and against the shoulders of which the ends of the long strap B at all times rest. By this construction the key E bears against the end of the key-hole or slot in the long strap B, and also bears against the block L. The gib D bears against the end of the key-hole or slot in the short strap 0 and the inner endof the key-hole in the rod A, so that when the long strap B and the short strap 0 are drawn together by driving in the key E, drawing the outer brasses G inward, the rod A and block L are pushed apart, pushing the inner brasses outward, so that the rod will always have the Same length; or, in other words, the axis of the pins H will always be at the same distance apart.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t-- In combination with the rod A, provided with the several transverse slots, as specified, the long strap B, short strap 0, bolts K, block L, brasses F G, gib D, and wedge E, all constructed and arranged, as shown and described, to provide for the requisite adjustment of the brasses without changing the distance between the shafts H, as set forth.
