COMBINED WINDOW-SHADE GUIDE, SHIELD, AND CURTAIN-POLE BRACKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,455, dated October 21, 1902.

Curtain-Pole Bracket, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined window-shade guide, shield, and curtain-pole bracket.

The objects of the invention are in a simple, thoroughly feasible, and practical manner to obviate interference between the win dow-shade and its supporting-brackets when the shade is being raised 'or lowered, to cause the shade to wind true upon its roller, and to prevent the roller-spring from unwinding should the shade escape from the operator in an attempt to raise or lower it.

A further object is to provide means in conjunction with the mechanism coacting with the shade for supporting a curtain-pole.

With these and other Objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a combined window-shade guide, shield, and curtain-pole bracket, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

bodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit thereof, and in the drawings-- Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing a portion of a window-casing with the device of the present invention applied thereto and ashade associated therewith. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the combined window-shade guide, shield, and curtain-pole bracket. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the device with the curtain-pole attachment omitted.

Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, 1 designates generally the combined window shade guide,

shield, and curtain-pole bracket, the same,

dow-shade is a duplicate of the other, except 7 that they are rights and lefts, so that a description of one will serve for both. The body portion 2 of the attachment is provided with a flange 3, disposed at right" angles thereto and having openings 4, through which are to be passed suitable fastening means for holding the device assembled with the window-casing. The lower end of the attachment terminates in two arms 5, dis posed at right angles to the body portion and parallel with each other and constitute a shade-guide, the arms being spaced apart a sufficient distance to permit the shade to work therebetween without interference therewith. The upper portion of the body carries a circular head 6, which constitutes a shield, the same being provided with a circular opening 7 of a size to permit passage therethrongh of the end of the shade-roller, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby to permit the roller-pintle to engage the ordinary rollerbracket 8. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the rear side of the head is flattened, as at 9, to permit it to lie flat against the end of the casing; but it is to be understood that this is not essential, as the device would operate equally as well if this side were constructed on curved lines. Projecting from the head are two curved arms 9, which combined constitute a curtain-pole bracket,these armsbeing pitched forward beyond theopening 7 in order that when the curtain-pole is disposed in the crotch formed by the arms 9 there will be no inter ference between the curtain and the shade.

Ifit be desired simply to provide a combined window-shade guide and shield, the curtain-pole crotch may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 3.

When the brackets of this invention are positioned upon the window-casingas shown in Fig. l, the terminals of the shade-roller will project through the openings 7, and the side portions of the shade will work between the guides 5. Thus in raising and lowering a shade its edges will ride against the inner sides of the body portions 2 and the shields, thereby in a positive manner causing the shade to wind true upon its roller and to prevent it from projecting beyond the end of the roller, and thus into engagement with one of the shade-brackets 8. As before stated, the guide-arms 5 are spaced a distance apart sufficient'to permit the shade to move freely therethrough; but if in an attempt to raise or lower the shade the same escapes from the hand of the operator its upper movement will be checked by the shade-stick 1O contacting with the under sides of the guides, so that the shade-spring will be positively prevented from unwinding, and thus losing its tension, obviating thereby the necessity of removal of the roller from the shade-brackets for the purpose of tightening the spring. When a curtain-pole is associated with the brackets, the curtain will not interfere with the free movement of the shade, as the forward pitch of the pole-brackets will be sufficient to clear the curtain from the shade.

The device of this invention is exceedingly simple of construction and may be cheaply and readily made, will be ornamental in character, and will be found to fill a long-felt want in all households.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character specified, comprising a body portion, a shield having an opening to receive the end of the shade-roller,

and a pair of guide-arms between which the side of the shade is adapted to work.

2. A device of the character specified, comprising a body portion provided with means for attachment to a suitable support, with a shield having an opening to receive the end of the shade-roller, and with a pair of guidearms to receive the side of the curtain.

3. A device of the character specified, comprising a body portion provided with means for attachment to a suitable support, a shield carried by the upper terminal of the body portion and provided with an opening to receive the end of the shade-roller and with ourtain-pole-engaging means,and a pair ofguidearms disposed at right angles to the lower terminal of the body portion to receive the side of a shade.

at. A device of the character specified, comprising a body portion provided with means for attachment to a suitable support, with a shield having an opening to receive the end of the shade-roller, with a curtain-pole-receiving crotch, and with a pair of guide-arms to receive the side of a curtain.
