pedestal E, the adjacent faces of the castings or coupling-pieces being formed to t closely upon one another, the castings being also formed with flanges c3 and c* to receive bolts c and c, respectively, by which the castings are firmly secured together, so that the cooler or condenser may be made up of as many pipes as may be desired and so that if any two pipes or sets of pipes are removed the pipes or sets of pipes above and below those removed can be firmly secured together. It will be understood that each inner pipe commnnicates at one end with the inner pipe be low it and at the other end with the inner pipe above it,while each outer pipe communiestes at one end with the outer pipo below it and at lthe othe: ond with the outer pipe above it. For the purpose of establishing communication between two adjacent outer pipes each of the castings or coupling-pieces C is provided with a radial opening er mouth c?, and the chambers of the corresponding castings or coupling-pieces' are carried to the meeting faces of the two castings, so that the mouths of the two chambers shall register when the two caatingsare assembleds clearly sho-:rn in 4 and 5, a packing ci being-interposed between the meeting edges, as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5, to insure a tight joint when the bolts c are set up. Itis obvious that the upperand lowercastings or couplingpieces of each pair may be precisely alike, the one being inverted with respect to the other. For the purpose of connecting adjaf cent inner pipesa returmbend D is provided having at each end a seat d for the end of the corresponding pipe A. This return-bend is held firmly against the ends of the pipe to form a tight joint by link-bolts F, which'may be pivoted upon the bolts c, and receive at their outer ends thumb-nnte f to engage slotted lugs d' on opposite sides of the elbow. The upper and lower pipes A of the cooler' are provided, respectively, with a coupling G for connection with the pipes which deliver to the cooler the liquid to oc-cooled and conduct away the' cool liquid. Such couplings may be held to the ends of the pipes A by substantially-the same moans as the returnbend D, as represented in Fig. 6. The npperniost coupling-piece C is preferably forme-d with a lateral connection for 'the pipe which delivers the cooling medium, and the lowerniost coupling-piece C may also be provided `with a lateral connection H' -for the pipe which conduct-s away the cooling medium.
Should it be desired at any time to clean with a brush the interiors of the inner pipes A, the returnbend l) can be removed readily to permit the introduction of the brush by loosening the thuznhmutsfand disengaging the bolts F. lf the removal of any pipe becomes necessary at any time, the removal of such pipe, together with the one above it or the one below it, as the case may be, can be accomplished readily by removing the bolts c5 above and below the pair of pipes at one' When the` It will pipes have been removed, as described, the pipes above and below those removed are con nected, as will be readily understood.
It will be evident that various changes in form and relative arrangement of the parte of the improved cooler or condenser may beY made, the invention not being restricted to the precise form and relative arrangement shown and described herein.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a cooler or condenser, aseries of sets of pipes, cach set comprising an inner and au outer pipe, a coupling -piece at one end of each set of pipes, adapted to receive and support the pipes, having a radial opening or mouth, incommunicatiou-with theouter pipo and having its opposite faces formed for contact with the next adjacent coupling-pieces, each of the conpling-pieces being arranged with its radial opening or mouth in communication with the radial opening or 'month of an adjacentcoupiingpieceand with its face opposite the radial opening or mouth in contact with the` corresponding 'face of an ad jacent coupling piece, means for detach ably securing each of the coupling-pieces to oneof the adjacent coupling-pieces and independent means for securing each ofthe con-piing-pieces to the other of the adjacent coup iingpieces, whereby each of tliecouplingl pieces may be removed without affecting the other coupling-pieces; substantiallyas described. Y
2. In a c'ooler or condenser, a series of sets of pipes, each set comprising an inuerand outer pipe, a coupling-piece at each end of each set of pipes, adapted to receive and support the pipes, having a radial opening or vmouth in communication with the outer pipe and having its opposite faces formed for contact with the next adjacent coupling-pieces,
flanges formed on the coupling-piece about.
the radial opening or mouth and flanges formed about the face opposite the radial opening or mouth, means for securing the flanges about the radial opening or mouth l of one coupling-piece to the corresponding danges of an adjacent coupling-piece, and independent means for securing the anges formed about theA face opposite th'e radial openingor mouth to the corresponding flanges of an adjacent coupling-piece, wherebya singie coupling-piece may be removed without aectin g the coupling-pieces of the other sets of the pipes; substantially as described.
