ALBERT ZOLLER, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,150, dated May 6, 1884.
Application filed November 22, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT ZOLLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of couplings in which the two hose-attaching pieces engage with a coupling-piece; and it consists in the novel means hereinafter described for engaging one of the attaching-pieces with the coupling-piece, whereby a lock-joint may be produced by a very simple adjustment of the parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of a coupling embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side View, partly in section, showing the parts sepa rated. Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the at- Fig. at is a like view of the coupling-piece.
Similar lettersindicate corresponding parts.
The letters A B designate the hose-attaching pieces, and C the coupling-piece. Both attachingspieces'A B are corrugated in the usual manner for properly retaining the hose, and at the inner end, where such pieces come in contact with each other, one, A, has a groove, 6, containing a suitable packing-ring, while at a suit-able distance from the inner end the other piece, B, has a shoulder, f, whereby it'engages with the coupling-piece O, a screw-nut, 9, serving to hold it in position. The attaching-piece A also has a handle, h, for its convenient manipulation. On the coupling-piece O is cast or otherwise formed an internal flange, which isdivided into two sections, Z t, of substantially equal length, by spaces or openings k 71', and on the attaching-piece A are formed external lugs, Z Z, which are adapted to pass through such spaces between the flange-sections to enter the The inner faces of the flangesections '6 i are inclined, one similar to the other, and the lugs Z Z are so arranged relatively to these faces that if the lugs are brought into the coupling-piece and the latter is turned in the proper direction the lugs engage with 70, they are beveled in similar directions on the proper edges.
Heretofore the hose-attaching pieces'of a hose-coupling have been provided, respectively, with external lugs and internal flangesections, so that the lugs on one piece can be locked behind the flanges on the other piece, and in another instance metal pipe-sections have been provided at their adjoining ends with lugs or flanges, so that .the said ends can ,be drawn together by a collar having internal flanges or lugs. Such couplings do not constitute my invention, and are not claimed by me.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the two hose-attaching pieces A and B, the former having the external lugs, Z Z, with the coupling-piece 0, having the flange-sections t Z and openings 70 7t, and devices loosely confining the couplingpiece permanently in position on the attaching-piece B, but permitting its free rotation thereon, substantially as described.
2. A hose-coupling consisting of the hose-- attaching. pieces A B, the former having the projecting lugs Z Z, and the other having the annular flange f, the coupling-piece 0, having the internal flange-sections, 2 Z, and openings k k, and means for permanently holding the coupling-piece against the said flange, but permitting it to be rotated on the attaching piece carrying said flange, substantially as described.
3. A hose-coupling consisting of the following elements, to wit: the hose-attaching pieces A and B, the former having the ex- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set ternal lugs, Z Z, and the otherhaving the annumy hand and seal in the presence of two sub- IO lur flange f and screw-nut g, and the couplingl scribing witnesses. piece 0, having the internal flange-sections, z
5 1', and openings k k, and loosely held between the flange and the nut, to permit its rotation \Vitnesses: on the hoseattaching piece B, substantially \V. HAUFF, as described. i OHAs. WAHLERs.
