Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS F. MACK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York,borough of Brooklymcounty of Kings, and State of New York, have iuvented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification sufdcient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
hily improvements relate to the form of box set forth in my concurrent application, Serial No. 73,275, led August 26, 1901, in which the distinguishing feature is a basic skeleton or frame made from a single continuous piece of metallic angle-bar bent to form parallel upper cross members, corner-posts, and floor members, the ends of this metallic angle-bar being rigidly united to constitute a one-piece frame, upon which the bottom, side, and end boards fit; and the present invention consists in the combination,with such basic frame or skeleton,of certain specific features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

The fundamental structure of the box is the rectangular frame F, made of angle-iron or other metallic bars or rods substantially rectangular in cross-section, the concave surfaces'facing inward, so as to constitute horizontal and vertical flanges for the reception, support, and protection of the edges of the bottom, side, and end pieces of the box. The
frame F is made of asingle bar of angle-iron or other metal cut and bent into the rectangular form shown, the ends of the bar being welded together, so as to create a continuous integral structure consisting of the floor members ff, the corner-posts ff, and the end cross-bars f2f2. In order to prevent the possibility of the spreading apart of the parallel members of the frame under undue strain, I use braces a a', the opposite ends of which are rigidly secured toopposed members ot' the frame. Thus in the drawings the end braces d d are shown as secured to and eX- tending between the lower portions of the opposed iianges of the corner-postsf'f, while the side braces d a' are secured to and eX- tend between the opposed flanges of the corner-posts at the opposite ends of the frame, with the result that the end braces d a preserve the alinement or parallelism of the iioor members ff, while in like manner the side braces insure the alinement of the upper cross-bars f2 f2.
The bottom B is preferably made in two or more sections B B to facilitate placing in position, which is done by resting the ends upon the inwardly-projecting horizontal flanges t' t' of the floor members ff. The side pieces S S are then placed in position, with their lower edges s restingupon the edges b b of the floor, their upper edges at the corners being pressed under the horizontal flanges jj of the upper cross-barsf2- The end pieces are next placed in position, with their lower edges e c resting against the bottom, their vertical edges against the inner surface of the side pieces, and their upper edges under the flangesjj of the end cross-bars fifz. It will thus be seen that the parts lock each other successively in position, it being only necessary to secure the end pieces F. E against movement in order to insure the stability of the structure as a whole; This I accomplish, preferably, by means of corner-brackets O C, resting against the inner surfaces of the end pieces E E and side pieces S S at their point of intersection. These corner-brackets are preferably made of angle-iron, but may be made of wood or any other material in any desired form in ICO cross-section, the essential feature being the use of strips or bindersmfhich may be secured rigidly to the frame F for the purpose of positively locking the sides S S and ends E E against movement. A simple and elective way of effecting this result is to rivet the corner-brackets C to the corner-postsff. Any other mechanical expedient may be resorted to in securing the corner-brackets rigidly to the frame F.
The bottom, side, and end pieces are made of Wood or any other desired material. When made of Wood of sufficient thickness, I rabbet the upper edges of the side pieces, as at s', and the lower edges of the end pieces, as at e3, to receive and overlap the braces d and d, respectively.
Thus far I have described the essential features of construction of the box claimed in said concurrent application hereinbefore mentioned. In my present case I combine with this special form of skeleton box-frame, dre., one or more hinged covers H H of novel construction and a special form of hand-hole shield. The latter consists of shields I I of ordinary construction, excepting that their upper ends are each formed with rectangular extensions t", which iit into the angle-iron f2,
'forming the end cross-bars of the box-frame,
as will be understood by reference to Fig. 6, in which it will be seen that the upper edge of the end pieces E may be fitted into the angle extension t" to hold the same firmly in place against and Within the angle-bar f2. This construction insures a permanent and rigid connection of the shields with the box and over the linger-openings 'i2 i2.
The covers H H each consist of a U-shaped frame U, of angular sheet metal, as angleiron, either of L shape, as shown in crosssection in most of the figures, or U shape in cross-section at h, Figs. 12 and 14. In either case the edge of the plate p, of wood or other material, t into the rectangular inner surfaces of the angle metal 7L or 7U and are secured thereto by riveting. Metallic dovvels k are inserted through the plate p, made of wood or shrinkable material, for the purpose of stiiening them and preserving their integrity. Where the L-shaped iron 7L is used, the plates p may be further reinforced by metallic cleats 7e', as shown clearly in Fig. 10. The U-frame is preferably made of one piece or bar of angle metal cut and bent to the required shape, although this is not absolutely essential provided the structure of the U- frame is rigid and integral. rIhe ends it u of the vertical lianges c of the frame Uare each formed with perfor-ations v', the body of a bolt acting as pintles in securing the ends of the frame U to the hinge-straps R, secured to or forming part of the side braces d' of the box-frame. Thus, by Way of illustration, in Fig. 2 the hinge-strap R consists of a rectangular plate riveted to the said side member d of the frame, While in Fig. S it is shown as made in one piece therewith and in Fig. et as made in one piece with the side cleat s2, riveted to the side plates S and to the side braces a'. In either case the hinge-strap R is formed with the perforations r r for the reception ot' the bolt or pintle q. The upper or outer flange v2 of each frame U is formed with shoulders yr3 c3, one near either extremityand in such relation to the pintle-holes c' that when the cover is lifted and turned back, so that its center of gravity is beyond its line of pivotal connection T.vith the hinge-straps R, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 8, these shoulders Will rest against the upper edges of the hingestraps R, and thereby sustain the cover in its raised position.
It is obvious that a single cover may be constructed and hinged to the box-frame With like result, if desired; butI prefer Where the box is to be used as a receptacle for bottles and like articles to use the duplex cover shown, in Which form the lids raise centrally above the box and Without interference or intrusion beyond the area of the box. By this arrangement, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 6, the lids when open afford a ready means of lifting the box, since the hand or hands may be passed underneath their inner ends of the covers and the latter used as a handle by Which the box may be lifted or transported. Furthermore, the double U-frames U when closed surround the box completely with a ridge constituted by the flanges 1:2, Within and between the inner edges of which the protruding bottom b2 of another box may be fitted, as shown in Fig. l5, the bottom plates of each box being specially formed for this purpose, as shown also in Figs. 5, 6, and 9. By this construction the boxes may be superposed one above the other Without danger of lateral or horizontal slip or motion, since the engagement of the protruding port-ion b2 of the bottom with the inner edges of the U-frames of the box below Would counteract and prevent any tendency of this kind.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a box substantially such as designated, the combination of the frame F, the braces a, and a', and bottom, side and end boards fitting Within said frame, hinge-straps R, integral with said box-frame and a cover consisting of a U-shaped metallic angle-bar U, pivotally connected to said hinge-straps R, and a cover-platep, fitting into and secured to said U-frame U, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a box substantially such as designated, the combination of the frame F, the braces a, and a', and bottom, side and end boards fitting Within said frame, of hinge-straps R, integral with said box-frame and two covers H, I-I, pivotally connected to said hinge-straps R, and consisting of U -shaped metallic angle-bar to which are secured cover-plates p, substantially as herein shown and described.
