Be it known that I, EGBERT M. ANTISDEL,Of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use i0 the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in bed-couplings; and the object and nature of the invention will be obvious to those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanations of the structure shown in the accompanying drawings as an example so of one form of my invention for purposes of illustration.

The invention consists in certain novel features in construction and'in arrangements and combinations of parts, as more fully pointed out and specified hereinafter.

In the drawings made a part of my specification, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a partial central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a 0 cross-section through the coupling and a bedpost, showing the headed pin in full lines. Fig. I is a sectional view of a portion of the tubular bedpost, showing the locking pins and their arrangement and location.

The most improved method of construction of my invention with which I am familiar comprises a tubular post 1 of the required size and length for forming the corner-post of an ordinary iron bed-frame, in which I securely place one or more round-headed pins 2, having a face 3 and neck 4. My coupling 5 is constructed with perforated flange 6 for connecting the coupling to the side rail by bolt ing or riveting in the ordinary way. The coupling is formed with recess 7, sufficiently large to admit the head of the pin with freedom. Projecting into the recess from opposite sides I provide two converging sets of double inclined wedge-shaped lugs 8, having inclined wedge-shaped faces, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 at 9, where the inclined face of each set of lugs are arranged to clamp the head and neck of the pin, as shown in Fig. 3. I arrange these lugs in opposing pairs 9 9, having wedge-shaped inner faces 10 10 for engaging the inner face of the pin-head and the neck of the pin, the lugs having crescent opening 11 for the passage of the pin-head. The longitudinal face 12 of the coupling is formed crescentshape in cross-section,so that the inner edges 13 of the crescent face impinge against opposite sides of the tubular posts, forming parallel bearing edges, so that when the head of the pin is inserted in the recess 7 through either opening a or Z) and when the coupling is moved onto and over the head and neck of the pin in the direction of the converging lines the head and neck of the pin and the double-inclined faces simultaneously engage the head and neck of the pin, which draws the inner parallel faces of the crescent opening in contact with the tubular post, rigidly securing and locking the parts together.

I do not wish to limit all features of my invention to the arrangement wherein the coupling engages the post approximately only along the opposite parallel lines 13 13. However, in carrying out this feature of my invention the coupling is longitudinally recessed or otherwise constructed to form the two arms, which along their inner faces engage the post on the opposite parallel lines l3 l3 whatever the shape of the post in crosssection may be. For instance, where I employ a post round in cross-section, as shown in the drawings, the longitudinal recess of the coupling is of a different curvature from that of the exterior cfthe post, so that the recessed face of the coupling engages the post along the lines 13 13 at the inner faces of the ends of the arms of the coupling formed by the recess, as shownin Fig. 3.

I do not wish to limit all features of myinvention to a coupling which directly engages the exterior round surface of the tubular post itself.

The bed-bottom can be held in different horizontalplanes byshiftingthe couplingonto the different projecting pins located in the legs in difierent horizontal planes and also by shifting the coupling on the same pin into either the upper or lower crescent openings in the lugs, and thus use the diiferent sets of lugs in different positions, which gives a limited range of adjustment with reference to the horizontal plane of the bed-bottom.

WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In bedsteads, the combination of the tubular posts with a projecting headed pin,with a coupling having a crescent face in crosssection, with a recess within the longitudinal crescent face of the coupling and pairs of inclined converging wedge-shaped oppositelydisposed lugs Within the recess, each lug having two inclined faces for engaging the head and neck of the pin, substantially as shown.

2. In bedsteads, the combination of the tubular posts having projecting pins with heads arranged in different horizontal planes with a coupling having a curved face in crosssection With recesses Within the longitudinal crescent face and pairs of oppositely-disposed converging inclined Wedge-shaped lugs Within the recess arranged in different planes, each lug having two inclined wedge-shaped faces for engaging the head and neck of the pin for supporting the bed in different horizontal planes, substantially as shown.

3. The combination of a round post having a projecting pin with head, with a coupling having a crescent face in cross-section and a recess in the face with oppositely-disposed lugs extending into the recess, each lug being provided with converging faces and each lug having converging Wedge-shaped inclines at the back to simultaneously engage the head and neck of the pin for the purposes stated.
