Description
J. SAMPSON.
Corn Planter Patented Nov. 19,1867.
Inventor,
AMPHDTO-I ITHO. C04 N.Y.(0SBORNE'S PROCESS) i ignite]: gt t ig @ff/iu:
J. M. SAMPSON, OF WAYNESVILLE, ILLINOIS.-
" Letters Patent No. 71,070, dated November 19, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GORN-PLANTERS.
dip snout marsh in in flgttt iftiittt has and mating part at it: are.
TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. M. SAMPSON, of Waynesville, in the county of De Witt, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Corn-Planter; and I, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
i exact description thereof, which'will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
- This invention relates to a new and improved corn-planter of that class in which the seed-distributing r device is operated-by hand, the device being mounted on wheels, and all arranged as hereinaft'er set forth,
whereby a very cheap, simple, and eflicient corn-planter is obtained. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line a: :27, fig. 2.
Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same. Figure 3, a detached vertical section of one of the seed-distributors. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. A represents the front part of the frame of the machine, which is composed of two side pieces a a, com nected by cross-bars 6 b, and has twocurved plates or runners B B attached to it, one at each side, with a furrow-opener, C, at the rear end of each runner. (See fig. 1.) To the rear part of the fram'e'of the machine there are secured vertical posts or standards D D, one at each side; and in each post or standard there is a rectangular opening, 0. These openings extend entirely through the posts or standards; and in each opening there is fitted a plunger, E, which is allowed to slide freely up and down. The upper ends of these plungers are attached, by links a to the ends of a rod, F, which is secured to two levers G G, the front ends of which are framed into a rock-shaft, H, which has its hearings in uprights d d on the part A of the frame. I is the droppers seat, attached to an elastic bar, J, on the rear part A of the frame. This seat is between the two levers G G, so that they may be readily operated by the dropper on the seat. Besides the openings cin the posts or standards D D, there is another, e, in each. The upper and lower ends of the openings c communicate with the openings 0, as shown clearly in fig. 1 and in each plunger there is made an opening, 1, in which screw, 9, is inserted. By turning these screws the capacity of the openings fmay be varied as desired. K K represent hoppers placed on the rear of the part A of the frame, one over each post or standard These hoppers have slots it made in their rear sides to admit of the corn passing from the hoppers into the openings f, when the plungers E are raised suificiently to admit of the openings f being in line with the slots it in the rear of the hoppers; and, when the plungers E are pressed or forced down, the corn or seed will be discharged from the openings f into the upper ends of the openings e, and will descend to the lower ends of the same, and bear against the plungers E; and, when the latter are raised, the seed or corn will drop out from the lower ends of the openings e, and be retained in the lower ends of the openings c by elastic plates 2', (see fig. 3,) the com or seed being forced out into the furrows as the plungers descend. L represents the rear part of the frame, which is connected to the front part A by a rod, M. The driver's seat N is placed on the part L, and said part I. is mounted on two wheels N N O are coverers, which cover the seed in a perfect manner.
v This invention contains no parts which are liable to get out of repair or become deranged by use.
Having thus described 'my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plungers E, fitted in openings c in the posts or standards D D, and provided with seed-cells o r openings f, in combination with the openings 6 in the posts or standards, and the elastic plates 2', all arranged to operate in connection with the hoppers K K and covcrers O, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
' J. M. SAMPSON.
