Description

@reitsh -,I-.taire @anni @frn CHARLES RUNDQUIST, OF MANKATO, MINNESOTA.
Letters Patent No.- 71,068Jated November 19,l 1867.
.IMPROVEMENT IN BRANDING-IRONS.
@the dgrhnle refrmr it in tlgrse tettas zltmt mit mating putt nf the sima.
TO ALL WIIOM I'I MAY vCONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RUNDQUIST, oi' Mankato, in the county of' Blue Earth, and State of' Minne- Sota, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Branding-Irons and I do hereby declarethattlle following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings forming part ot' this specification.
The present invention consists, among other features, in a novel construction of the`holder for the types; also in the form ot' the Shanks of the types, and in the means employed for securing them in the holder, as will 'be hereinafter particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying-plate of drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation o the branding-iron, with its end, which directly forms the holder, in longitu- 'v dinal section, and
Figure 2 a transverse section takcnin the plane of the line :l: fr, fig. I. i Similar letters of' reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the handle'for the branding-iron, which handle, at one end, B, is formed of a series of arms, C, that at their outer ends, D, are connected together through parallel side bars or pieces, E, and end pieces, F, the space Gf, between the several pieces E and F, constituting the socket to receive and hold the type-letters G, with which it is desired to brand. 'lhe letters G are each backed by a plate, I'I, which plate is of such size as to entirely close the opening ot' the socket-holder when placed thereon, alongside of each other, each plate H terminating ina tapering squareshaped shank, I, projecting beyond the inner end of the holder. where, by driving pins, J, through them, they are firmly and tightly secured within 'the holder. In the 'spaces between the several shanks of the types, when in the holder, pieces L are inserted, of suitable shape to entirely fill the same and retain the several letters at their proper distances apart. M-isa set-screw inserted in one end of the holder, and bearing against the shank I of the types, for the purpose of' securing them more firinlyin position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the types, having tapering Shanks I, andk plates H, the pins Jhside bars E, end pieces F, set-screw M, blocks L, arms C, and handleB, all constructed as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The types, constructed as described, provided with the back plates H and tapering Shanks I, secured in the holder by means of the transverse pins J and blocks L, the latter securedin position between the types by means of the central curved arms C, as herein shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 12th day of January, 1867.
CHARLES RUNDQUIST.
