ROLLER SIDE BEARING FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,673, dated October 7, 1902.

Be it known that l, FRANCIS K. FAssETT, a citizen of the United States,residing in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller Side Bearings for Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved roller side bearing for cars. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevational View of the endless chain of rollers. Fig. t is a detail view of a modified form of endless chain of rollers. Fig. is an elevational View of the form shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is another modified form showing a simplified construction. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the construction shown in Fig; 6, and Fig. S is a detail view showing a modified form of spacing medium.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in roller side bearings for railway-cars and is designed particularly as an improvement in that type of side bearings shown and described in United States Patent No. 682,406, dated September l0, 1901.
In my former patent referred to there is a track-plate around which travels an endless chain of rollers. These rollers are shown as being conical,and their spindles are mounted in links forming chains of unequal lengths. No means., however, are provided in the construction shown in my former patent for preventing vertical play of the rollers, and it is the object of my present invention to provide means for the accomplishment of such a result, and in that way it is possible for me to dispense entirely with the connecting-links. If it is desired to space the rollers, such spacing can be effected by means of spacingblocks, or the links of my former patent can be employed, as will be understood.
My present invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a casting,which is preferably provided with attaching-lugs 2, whereby the same may be secured in position on the truck-bolster or body-transom, as the case may be, which is illustrated in the drawings at 3. I
Il indicates a track-plate which is supported by the side walls 5 of the casting some distance away from the bolster 3. In my present form the inner faces of these side walls are provided with grooves 6 adjacent the track -plate and completelyy encircling the same. In order to introduce the spindles of the rollers into the grooves, a removable plate 7 may be employed, which plate When in position makes the groove in which it is located practically continuous.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the track-plate is slightly inclined, and its side edges are radially disposed to the king-pin of the truck. 8 indicates coned rollers whose spindles 9 extend at each end of the roller into the grooves 6 at each side of the trackplate. These spindles also carry links 10, said links acting as spacers for the rollers and forming when in position chains of unequal leugths. The extended roller-spindles cooperating with the grooves prevent the rollers from being tilted or canted in operation and also serve to take up the lateral thrust to which said rollers may be subject. By continuing the grooves under the trackplate, as shown inV Fig. 2, the rollers are supported, thus taking strain off of the links and the sag out of the chains.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the side bearing constructed as above is applied to the truck-bolster, as above described, and in this figure I have shown the top bearing member, (indicated at 11,) which is usually secured to the body-transom.
In Figs. et and 5 I have shown a modified form of my invention in which the links are I dispensed with and in lieu vthereof spacingblocks 12 are employed. These spacingthe exception that the roller-spindles do not pass through openings in their ends, but are received in semicircular recesses, as shown.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a construction wherein links and spacers are wholly dispensed with and rollers are arranged suiiiciently close together so as to be held in position, their spindles being extended and received in the grooves at each side of the track-plate, as above described.
In Fig. 8 I have shown another modified form of my invention in Which a spool-shaped spacing medium 13 is employed between the rollers, the heads coperating with the spindles of the rollers to space them apart.
I am aware that many minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a side bearing for cars, the combination with a truck-bolster, of a track-support arranged thereon, an endless chain of independently -spaced rollers surrounding the track-support, the spindles of said rollers being received in grooves on each side of said track-support; substantially as described.
2. In a side bearing for cars, the combination with a truck-bolster, of a track-support arranged thereon, an endless chainA of independent rollers held apart by means carried thereby, said rollers surrounding the tracksupport, the spindles of said rollers being received in grooves on each side of said tracksupport; substantially as described.
3. In a side bearing for cars, the combination with a truck-bolster, of a track-support arranged thereon, an endless chain of independentlyspaced rollers surrounding the track-support,the bearing-faces of said rollers being held apart by means bearing on the spindles thereof and the spindles of said rollers being received in grooves on each side of said track-support; substantially as described.
4. In a side bearing, the combination with an inclined track-support Whose side edges are substantially radial to the king-pin, of a plurality of rollers, means between said rollers to secure independent spacing thereof, spindles on said rollers, and a guideway Within the roller-casing for said spindles; substantially as described.
5. In a side bearing, the combination with an inclined track-support whose side edges are substantially radial to the king-pin, of a plurality of conical rollers, means between said rollers to secure independent spacing thereof, spindles on said rollers, and a guide- Way Within the roller-casing for said spindles; substantially as described.
6. In a side bearing, the combination with an inclined track-support whose side edges are substantially radial to the king-pin, of a plurality of rollers, means between said rollers bearing on the spindles thereof to secure independent spacing thereof, spindles on said rollers, and a guideway within the roller-casing for said spindles; substantially as described.
7. In a side bearing, the combination with an inclined track-support whose side edges are substantially radial to the king-pin, of a plurality of'conical rollers, means between said rollers bearing on the spindles thereof to secure independent spacing thereof, spindles on said rollers, and a guideway within the roller-casing for said spindles; substantially as described.
. S. In a side bearing, the combination with a track-support, of a series of coned rollers, spindles on said rollers, a guideway for said spindles, spacing means bearing on said spindles at their reduced ends, and spacing means at the larger ends of said rollers; substantially as described.
9. In a side bearing, the combination with an inclined track-support, of a series of rollers cooperating therewith, spindles on the ends of said rollers, guides for said spindles, and spacing means of different lengths at each end of said rollers; substantially as described.
10. In a side bearing, the combination with a-track-support, of a series of coned rollers, spindles on said rollers, guideways for said spindles, spacing-links bearing on said spindles at their reduced ends, and spacing means at the larger ends of said rollers; substantially asdescribed.
1l. In a side bearing, the combination with an inclined track-support, of a series of rollers cooperating therewith, spindles on the ends of said rollers, guides for said spindles, and spacing-links of dierent lengths at each end of said rollers; substantially as described.
12. In a side bearing for cars, the combination with a truck-bolster, of Va track-support arranged thereon, an endless chain of independentlyspaced rollers surrounding the track-support, the spindles of said rollers being received in grooves on each side of said track-support whereby said rollers are permitted to bear only against the upper surface of said track; substantially as described.
13. In a side bearing for cars, the combination with a truck-bolster, of a track-support arranged thereon, an endless chain of independent rollers held apart by means carried thereby, said rollers surrounding the tracksupport, the spindles of said rollers being received in grooves on each side of said tracksupport whereby said rollers are permitted to bear only against the upper surface of said track; substantially as described.
14.
