UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IOHN ROBERTSON, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
WINDOW SHADEAND SCREEN HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,515, dated October 7, 1902.
Application filed May 10, 1902. Serial No. 106,695. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom. t Wtcty concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ROBERTSON, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow Shade and Screen Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in rolling shade and screen holders. It is designed to secure or confine the vertical edges of the shade or screen so as to preventair or dust from entering the room between the shade or screen and the Window-casing.
It consists of two members, one hinged to the other midway its face, so that the base part forms a support for the other member, whether open or closed, and it is provided with coil-springs secured to the ends of each member, said spring extending transversely across the pivot-point, so that the movable' member is locked, whether open or closed, and held yieldingly locked in either position by said spring.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this application, Figure l is a perspective View of myimproved shade and screen holder secured to the window-casing; and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the window casing and shade, the shade being shown in section, one of the clamping members being shown open and the other closed.
Same letters of reference referto like parts.
In said drawings, A represents a windowframe, and B a shade or screen of the usual roller variety.
My improved holder consists of two members, one, O, which may be called the base, adapted to be secured to the window-casing adjacent the vertical edge of the shade, and the other, D,which may be called the clamp, hinged to the former at a point distant from the outer edge equal to its thickness, so that when opened the base will form a seat or rest for the other member. The outer or clamping member for convenience should extend slightly beyond the inner edge of the base, so as to afford a convenient nger-grip for opening it, as seen at H in Fig. 2. Secured to the ends of said base and clamping-strip is a coil-,spring E, extending transversely across the pivot-line, by reason of which the spring holds the clamping member either open or closed, as shown in Fig. 2. The base may be secured to the window-casing in any convenient manner, as by screws or nails. TheY joint formed by the union of the two parts may be sealed in any convenient manner, as by a piece of cambric F, extending across the line where the two members are hinged together, as shown in Fig. 2.
The operation of my improved shade and screen holder will be apparent from the drawings and description. When it is desired to adj ust the shade or screen, the clamping members are opened and the shade adjusted. The clamping members are then turned into position shown at the left of Fig. 2, firmly gripping the edges of the shade between the members of the holder, the springs holding them thus closed.
The advantages of my improved holder are that the two parts are distinct from the window-casing, can be attached to or removed from the window at will, can be sold as an article ofl manufacture independently of the window-casing, andthe clamping member is automatically locked either in its open or closed position by means of the spring, which makes it much more convenient to operate than would be the case if the spring only tended to hold it in its closed position, in which case it would be difficult to hold them both open and at the same time manipulate the shade.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a window shade or screen holder consistingofa base and clamping member hinged thereto and a coil-spring secured to the ends thereof and extending transversely across the pivot-line, whereby said spring automatically locks the clamping member both in openand closed position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 8th day of May, 1902.
JOI-IN ROBERTSON.
In presence of- ELGIN C. VEREILL, NATI-IAN CLIFFORD.
