The preferred construction is as follows: A represents a blade or cutter frame comprising members A A2, formed from sheet metal; B, a block secured in theframe A at the free end vthereof and supplied with a'bolt-cutting blade havingl a sharp edge d parallelwith a side of the frame and provided also with a dull nut-bearing edge ct,perpendicnlar thereto; C, areciprocable blade-attaching block movable longitudinally 0f the frame; C', a bolt-cutting blade having a sharp cutting edge b directly opposed to the blade aj C2, a bolt cutting or splitting blade having a sharp cutting edge b directly opposed to the nut-bearing edge ed; D, short links pivotally connected with the frame member A', and Dflevers having enlarged ends slotted to receive thev rear ends of the links D and lugs or ears c, with which the block C is provided at its rear end or base. The links are connected by pivots cl with the frame member A and by pivots d with the levers D', and the levers are connected by pivots d2 with the base of the block C.
The frame member A is integrally formed from sheet metal and is of general U shape,
kaffording sidesfand a connecting-web f', the latter constituting the end of theimplement. The sidesf are spaced to receive the block C between them and are provided with longitudinal slots or openingsfZ, one of which has an enlargement f5 at its rear portion. The rear extremities of the sides fare provided with laterally-projecting ears f4, corresponding sets of which receive between them the enlargedfront ends of the links D. In the operation of stamping out or blanking the frame member A the lateral edges are provided with recesses which produce,after forming, the cut-away or sheared corners f5.
The frame member Azcom prises a U-shaped strip with parallel lateral edges and integrally-stamped lateralvlugs g, which pass through corresponding perforations, with which the member A' is provided, and serve as rivets. Thus the member A2 is in reality a U -shaped spacing-piece, havingsidesg and a web g2, the latter lying adjacent to the inner surface of the web f.` The web g2 reinforces the end of the frame, and the complete member A2 irmly connects the sides of the member A' and affords with the member A a box-frame open at the top and bottom (at the slots f2) and open at the rear end to receive the block C. As shown in Fig. 4, the sides g' form guides for the lateral edges of the block C and are so located with relation to the longitudinal walls of the slots f2 that flanges 7L are left to form top and bottom guides for said block C. V'The block O has its upper and lower front portions cut away, leaving a projection 7c of reduced cross-section, at the base of which are transverse shoulders 7c' k2. The blade C"a is formed with a shoulder 7c3, which ahuts against the end of the projection hand it has a rearward extension 7.a", which'abuts against't'nel shoulder 7s'. The extensions 7c 7e" are provided with registering, vertical slots 795. The blade C ahuts at its base end against the shoulder 702 and has a threaded perforation receivinga screw 7o, extending through the slots 705. When the screw is tightened, a connection is formed capable of transmitting great compressive force from the levers. The bolt-knives are subjected to great wear and must be frequently ground, while there is little wear upon the nut-blades. The construction permits the IOO bolt-knife C to be adjusted as required, a wedge or block Z of 4desired thickness being inserted between the rear end of the blade and the shoulder k2. To hold the block in place, the shoulder 7a2 is undercut and the block is provided with a lip, as shown in Fig. 7. V
The blade B fits between the sides g of the member'A2 andghas top and bottomprojections ,Which lit in the slots fz of the top and bottom platesf. Said blade is inserted at the enlarged opening f3 and moved forward into position, being secured by a screw m. The blade C' has its lateral edges in contact with the sides g' and has a projection n, fitting snugly between the flanges h. Said blade is inserted from the rear and then raised into position. The blade C2 has its lateral edges in contact with the sides g and has a projection n', which fits su ugly between the flanges h. Said blade is inserted from the rear and then raised into position, the block C being inserted lastly and the screw inserted to secure the blades thereto.
The manner of using the implement will be readily understood from the foregoing detailed description. When a bolt is to be clipped, the implement is placed so that the bolt projects between the cutting edges ct and l). When a nut is to be split, the implement is reversed, so that the vertical edges ct b engage the nut. In the operation of splitting the nut the blunt edge d acts as a bearing, while .the sharp edge b', cuts into the nut approximately to the bolt and causes the walls of the cut to separate, the two halves of the nut swinging about the bearing a'.
An implement constructed as described is capable of withstanding great strain,is cheap, and thoroughly efficient.
Changes in minor details of construction within the spirit of my invention may be made. Hence no undue limitation should be understood from the foregoing detailed descript-ion. For instance, a less desirable but still valuable construction within the spirit A of my invention would result if either of the frame members A and A2 were altered so as to be no longer integral, and even if both were thus altered valuable featuresof the invention would remain. l
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an implement of the character described, a cutter-frame comprising suitablyspaced sheet-metal side plates vconnected at one end, and sheet-metal connection joining said side plates rigidly together and formingv therewith a box open at one end, for the purpose set forth.
2. In an implement of the character described, a cutter-frame comprising suitablyspaced sheet-metal side plates connected at one end, and sheet-metal connection joining said side plates rigidly together and forming therewith a box open at one end, said firstnamed plates having pivot-perforations at 3. In an impl-ement of the character described, a frame comprising a U -shaped sheetmetal member with integrally-formed sides and end web,` and separately-formed connecting meansY joining said sides firmly together,` for the purpose set forth.
v 4. In auY implement of the character described, a frame comprising top and bottom side plates and a U-shaped sheet-metal strip secured between. said plates, for the purpose set forth.
5. In an implement of the character described, a frame comprising top and bottom side plates, and suitably-spaced sheet-metal mem bershavinglugs formed integrally therewith and passing through perforations in said side plates and riveted in place, for the purpose set forth.
6. In an implement of the character described, a frame comprising a U -shaped sheetmetal member with integrally-formed side plates and end web,and suitably-spaced sheetmetal plates having lugs at their lateral edges secured in perforations in said first-named member, for the purpose set forth.
7'. In an implement of the character described,aframe comprisinga U -shaped sheetmetal member with integrally-formed side plates and end web, and a U -shaped connecting member with integrally-formed sides and connecting end web, said last-named member forming a box with said rst-named member, for the purpose set forth.
S. The combination with a stationary blade, a reciprocable blade, and a pair of levers, of a frame, .comprising a U-shaped sheet-metal member having integrally-formed side plates and connecting end Web,said last-named member having lever-connecting means at the rear extremities of its side plates, and connecting means joining said side plates rigidly together, for the purpose set forth.
9. In an implement of the character described, a frame comprising a U -shaped sheetmetal member with integrally-formed side plates and end web, a U-shaped connecting member with integrally-formed sides and connecting end web, said last-named member forming a box with said first-named member, and having lugs on its lateral yedges connected with the side plates of said first-named member, for the purpose set forth.
10. In an implement of the'character described, the combination with a frame, a fixed blade, and a pair of levers, of a reciprocable block connected with said levers and having a forward extension of reduced cross-section with shoulders at its base, .and blades secured to said block and having abutting shoulders, for the purpose set forth.
