To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK BRUNO WAIBEL, a citizen of the United States, residingin the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in a Combined Lamp and Lantern, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a device adapted for use both as a house-lamp and as a lantern which may be carried out of doors, the device having in its combined characteristics the complete functions of the lamp and the lantern, and when the device is used as a houselamp the upper portion is removed.

My improvement relates especially to the means employed for quickly and completely connecting or disconnecting these parts.

The reservoir, burner, and chimney, the parts adapted for use as a house-lamp, may be of any desired character, as may also be the lantern base, chimney, top, handle, and wire guard, which when connected to the house-lamp portion form a complete lantern for use out of-doors. In connection with the reservoir for oil I employ an annulus or collar surrounding the upper portion thereof and securely fastened thereto in the manufacture, so that the parts are as one. This annulus or collar is provided with mortises at opposite points and with an intermediate notch, and the handle to the reservoir has a spring character and is of such construction that it forms the means for carrying about the lamp and the operative parts by which the lamp is connected to and disconnected from the upper portion in forming the lantern, the details of which are more particularly hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, with part of the lantern-base removed, representing 1ny improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of the reservoir for oil with part of the annulus in section. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the annulus or collar and the devices connected therewith which are employed both as a handle and for connecting the oil-reservoir to the lantern-base; and Fig. 4C is a section at the line x as, Fig. 1, in larger size.

All of these parts are of usual or well-known construction and do not require further description.

I provide an annulus or collar 2', of sheet metal, of inverted-L shape in cross-section. This annulus or collar surrounds the upper portion of the reservoir to. The respective edges of this annulus or collar are in the finished article securely fastened in any desired manner to the reservoir to, so that between said parts there is an annular chamber which is formed without in any way injuring the fluid-tight character of the reservoir a.

In opposite sides of the annulus or collar 7; there are mortises 2 and intermediate to these mortises a notch 3 in the lower edge. The engaging device comprises spring-arms 7t 7t of circular form and Within the annulus or collar and generally conforming therewith or concentric thereto. I prefer to make these arms of one piece of spring-wire connected at a central point 6 to the annulus or collar 2' by solder. These arms are provided with bends 4 5, extending through the mortise 2 and projecting slightly beyond the outer surface of the said annulus or collar, and I provide guides 7, as angular strips of metal soldered to the inner surface of the said annulus or collar and projecting over the arms 7o 70, partially to limit the movement thereof and partially to keep the same in a given path of movement. These arms are bent at right angles and pass through the notch 3, and they are outside of the reservoir bent into any desired or advantageous configuration to form a handle 7a to be grasped by the hand. The substantially parallel portions outside of the annulus t are advantageously surrounded by sleeves 8,Which strengthen or stiffen the same and indicate the points to be grasped by the fingers. The free ends of the said arms are passed through the metal forming the body of the reservoir CL and are soldered thereto, and they are surrounded at this point by a clip 9, also preferably soldered thereto, so

that between the clip 9 and the soldered connection to the reservoir (1 the ends of the said arms are fixed immovably and directly connected to the said reservoir.

In the operation of connecting the lamp to the upper portion'to form the lantern or in disconnecting the said parts the handle and spring-arms are grasped by the fingers, preferably at the sleeves 8, and pressure is applied to force the parts toward one another. This action retracts the bends 4 5, or, in other words, draws the same within the said annular chamber and out of an internal groove m in the lantern-base d,which is provided therefor and by Which means the parts are removably connected. The base d is also necessarily notched to receive the stem of the wickraiser; but these details of construction form no necessary part of my invention.

I claim as my invention 1. In a combined lamp and lantern, the combination with the lantern-base and the reservoir for oil, of a device comprising a spring-arm and integral handle secured to the reservoir and having parts adapted to engage the base of the lantern in connecting the same to the reservoir, said device also serving as a handle for carrying about the reservoir for oil and the parts connected therewith, substantially as set forth.

2. In a combined lamp and lantern, the

combination with the lantern-base and the reservoir for oil, of an annulus or collar surrounding and secured to the upper portion of the said reservoir and between which parts thereis provided an annular chamber, springarms Within the said annular chamber connected to the said annulus or collar and having portions protruding from the opposite sides thereof through apertures in said annulus or collar, the said spring-arms together projecting from the annulus or collar and being bent over into a form to provide a handle with the free ends thereof connected to the reservoir, substantiallyas set forth.

3. In a combined lamp and lantern, the combination with the reservoir for oil, of an annulus or collar surrounding and secured to the upper portion of the said reservoir and between which parts there is provided an annular chamber, the said annulus or collar having mortises at opposite points and a notch in the lower edge at an intermediate point, and spring-arms of curved form within said annular chamber and concentric to the said annulus or collar and having bends 4 5 extending through said mortises and connected by solder to the annulus or collar at a point intermediate to the bends, and the said arms projecting from the said annulus orcollar through the said notch and being bent toa configuration forming a handle for the reservoir with the free ends connected rigidly and permanently to the reservoir, substantially as set forth.

4. In a combined lamp and lantern, the combination with the reservoir for oil, of an annulus or collar surrounding and secured to the upper portion of the said reservoir and between which parts there is'provided an annular chamber, the said annulus or collar having mortises at opposite points and a notch in the lower edge at an intermediate point, and spring-arms of curved form within said annular chamber and concentric to the said annulus or collar and having bends 4: 5 extending through said mortises and connected by solder to the annulus or collar at a point intermediate to the bends and the said arms projecting from the said annulus orcollarthrough the said notch and being bent to a configuration forming a handle for the reservoir with the free ends connected rigidly and permanently to the reservoir,and sleeves 8 surrounding the spring-arms adjacent to and outside of the said annulus or collar and indicating the place to be grasped by the fingers in operating the device, substantially as set forth.

5. In a combined lamp and lantern, the combination with the lantern-base and the reservoir for oil, of an annulus or collar surrounding aud secured to the upper portion of the said reservoir and between which parts there is provided an annular chamber, springarms within the said annular chamber, and connected to the said annulus or collar and having portions protruding from the opposite sides thereof through apertures in said annulus or collar, the said spring-arms together projecting from the annulus or collar and terminating in devices adapted to be grasped by the fingers of the hand for operating the spring-arms, substantially as set forth.
