siding at and whose post-office address is the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
Referring tothe accompanying drawings, wherein like reference-letters indicate the same or corresponding parts, Figure l is a View of myimproved device, partially shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line2 2 of Fig. l and viewed lin the direction indicated by the arrows at the sides of said figure. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a portion of` the parts shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are sectional views taken, respectively, on the lines 4E 4, 5 5, and 6 6 of Fig. 3. Figs. 7 and 8 are sectional views to be hereinafter more fully described. Fig. 9 is a sectional view showing approximately the position of the port c when the port c' is in the position shown in Fig. S. Fig. 10 illustrates a modified form of a portion of the parts of my device to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
My invention relates to water-heating devices; and it has for its objects, first, the heating of water withrgreat rapidity; second, that while` the gas-supply shall be fully turned on the water-supply maybe increased to its maximum amount or greatly diminished Without affecting the gas-supply; third, that when the water-supply shall have been reduced or` increased to a certain degree the gas-supplyl will be respectively reduced or increased, and, fourth, when the water-supply shall have been entirely cut off the gas-supply will also be cut off; and to those ends it consists in the features of construction and combination to be hereinafter more fullydescribed,and pointed out in the claims hereto annexed.
Briefly referring to the drawings, X is a casing within which is located a series of1enticular Water-chambers II, into Which Water is admitted through the pipe b2 and disf charged through the pipe I.

the Water contained therein or passing therethrough are heated by the burner, the bafflers J serving to direct the heat against the Walls of said chambers II.
More particularly referring to the drawings, A is a handle controlling the valve-stem ct, which controls the valves B C, said valves being, respectively, for Water and gas, valve C being a double valve, the ports c of which control the gas-supply from the pipe lD to the burner E and the port c of which controls the supply of gas from the pipe D to the pilotburner F, While valve B controls the supply of water from the pipe b, through the port to the pipe b2, the chamber G, the lenticular members H, and the exhaust-pipe I. In constructing my `device I prefer to make the valve B quick-closing and the valve C slowclosing in operation, which may be accom` plished by making the ports of the slow-closing valve of greater length than those of the quick-closing valve. I also prefer to. construct the port c' in such manner as in operating to be slow-closing and so positioned in relation to the port c that it will be opened before and remain open until port c is fully opened. If desired, the port c may, however, be constructed to remain open even when the port cis fully open.
The pilot-burner F may be rigidly connected to the casing of the valve C and immovable, as shown in Fig. l0; but I prefer that it be movable, so that it may be lighted from Without the casing X and thereafter swung in over the burner E. This result may be accomplished in many different Ways; but I prefer to employ the construction shown in the drawings, Figs. l, 3, 4, 7, and 8, in which the pilot is shown as attached to or forming a part of the valve-stem Ct and movable therewith, the port c communicating with the pilot by means of the passage c2, formed in the valve-stem. It will be seen that when so constructed it' the handle A be slightly turned gas from the pipe D will pass through the port c', Vthence through the passage c2 to the pilot F, where it may be lighted. If the turning of the handle A be continued in the direction to open the ports b' c c', the pilot will be swung within the casing Xand over the burner IOO E, the port c being at the same time opened to admit gas to the burner, which gas will be ignited by the pilot-light and the valve B opened to admit water. A reversal of the movement of the handle A will shut oft the water and gradually shut off the gas-supply to the burner, the supply thereto being entirely cut oft when the movement' of the valvestem shall have brought the pilot without the casing, where it may be extinguished by a still further movement of the handle A, closing the port c', or by means of a cock c3, which may be of any suitable construction. When water is admitted to the pipe b2, it passes to the upper one of the series of chambers G, thence through the passage g into the upper section of the topmost lenticular member H, thence through the passages 7L to the lower section of said lenticular member, thence through the passage g to the second chamber G, whence it passes in the same manner to the next lenticular member, and so on, until it is iinally discharged through the pipe I, which pipe may, if desired, be controlled by a cock 1I. The lenticular form of members H forms an important though not essential feature of my invention and constitutes a decided improvement over all other devices now known to the art. Any suitable form of members H may be employed which will thin out the water or spread it over a greater area at a point approximate to its periphery, so that its particles will be more quickly acted upon by the heat than they would otherwise be, though I prefer to employ the form shown in cross-section in Fig. l, wherein the members H are so constructed that if we should divide any one of them by a series of vertical walls concentric to the chamber G said walls would all have the same area. By tapering these members after the manner shown in the drawings it will be seen that the Water will be greatly thinned out at the point where it passes from the upper to the lower passage within said chambers, in consequence of which it will be more quickly acted upon by the heat. These lenticular members H, I prefer for purposes of convenience and economy in construction to form separately and thereafter to combine them in series, assisted by the cast members h h2 and packing h3 by means of the rod or bolt h4.
Still further referring to the drawings, X is a casing preferably formed of alternate layers of metal and asbestos; J, baftlers which direct the heat toward the center of the device, said bafi'lers being preferably so pro portioned that those farther from the burner will extend nearer the center of the device than those which are located nearer the burner, thus causing the members H to be exposed for a longer time to the influences of the heat when the same shall have lost a part of its intensity; rr', a cover which may be constructed in a manner similar to that of the casing; m2, heat-vents; 003, air-holes.
It will he understood that the cocks c3 t' may be employed or omitted, as desired, that I do not confine myself to the employment of any particular number of lenticular members H, chambers G, passages g h, while it will be further understood that the number, size, and form of the parts of my device and the manner of assembling them together may be greatly varied without departing from the principle of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a Water-heater, the combination of a series of communicating lenticular waterchambers,water supply and discharge means communicating therewith, a series of graduated bafle-plates between said chambers, and means carried by said plates for supporting the chambers, substantially as described.
2. In a water-heater, the combination with a casing, inwardly-extending baffle-plates carried by said casing, annular sections carried by said plates, lenticular Water-chambers between said annular sections, and means for clamping the said sections and chambers together, substantially as described.
3. In a Water-heater, the combination with a casing, of inwardly-extending baffle-plates carried by said casing, annular sections supported by said plates, lenticular Water-chambers supported by said annular sections, caps adjacent the outer ends of the upper and lower lenticular chamber, and a clampingbolt passing through said chambers and sections and clamping the caps on said chambers, substantially as described.

In a water-heater, the combination With a casing, inwardlyextending baffle plates carried by said casing, annular sections supported by said plates, lenticular chambers supported by said annular chambers, plates dividing said chambers horizontally and having communication with the upper and lower sections of said chambers formed by said plates, a water-supply, discharge means in communication with said chambers and means for securing said chambers to the annular sections, substantially as described.
5. In a water-heater, the combination with a casing, graduated battle-plates, carried by said casing, inwardly-extending arms carried by said plates, annular sections supported by said arms, lenticular chambers supported by said sections and extending between the bathe-plates, plates dividing said chambers horizontally, and having openings near their outer periphery, thus communicating the two sections formed by said plate, a water supply and discharge pipe in communication with said chambers, caps adjacent the outer ends of the upper and lower IOO Ilo4
