HAT ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 708,913, dated September 9, 1902.
Application filed December 31, 1901. Serial No 87,961. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED OLSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, haveinvented new and usefullm provements in Hat Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hat attachment for carrying or holding a comb, brush, and mirror; and the object of the same is to provide a simple and effective device which can be readily inserted in and removed from a hat and be out of sight when not in use within the hat-crown without interfering with the free application of the hat carrying the same to the head, and thus have the toilet articles mentioned within convenient reach for immediate use and in compact arrangement, the parts of the attachment being adjustable to adapt the same for insertion in various-sized hats.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved attachment complete. Fig.2 isa longitudinal vertical section through the hat, showing the attachment applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modified form of the attachment with the brush and comb detached therefrom. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a further modification of the attachment without the brush and comb.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate opposite supporting members, having their upper terminals telescopically united, as at 3, and movable through a mirror-frame 4, provided with a suitable mirror 5. The lower ends of the members 1 and 2 are respectively formed with yielding holders 6 and 7 to receive a combs and a brush 9. p
All of the forms of the improved attachment embody the essential features of structure just set forth, and the supporting members 1 and 2 are made adjustable to render the attachment applicable to different sizes of hats, the attachment when applied being positioned within a hat, as shown by Fig. 2,
with the holders, together with the comb and brush engaging the same, pushed into the sweat-band of the hat and the mirror and its frame centrally located at an elevation and below the apex of the crown of the hat. It is proposed to reduce the holders 6 and 7to a minimum as regards thickness or projection inwardly toward each other and also to use a comb and a brush having a reduced extent to avoid interfering projections within the crown of the hat.
The improved attachment is to be manufactured of any suitable material, as wire or sheet metal, preferably aluminium, in View of the lightness of the latter, and is convenient for use by those traveling or in camp or ordinary domestic purposes. As will be more fully hereinafter explained, the attachment will be shaped to fit Within different hat contours, and when located within a hat it will reinforce the same and prevent crushing or injury thereto, especially when blown from the head of the wearer and forcibly striking the ground.
To specifically refer to the structure of the several forms shown, thatillustrated by Figs.
1 and 2 is constructed of wire, and the holder having upstruck inverted-V-shaped members 11, between which and the main body portions of said holders the comb and brush are inserted.
The holders 6 and 7 in the form shown by Fig. 3 are provided with yielding tongues 12, formed by slotting the metal of each, as at 13, the sheet metal used in constructing this form of device being extended in width to provide the said holders, so as to practically secure the comb and brush held by the tongues 12.
In the form of the device shown by Fig. 4 the holders 6 and 7 are substantially similar to those shown by Fig. 1, except that both holders are formed with twisted necks, whereas in Fig. 1 the holder 7 has the two parts of the member 2 bent down and regularly continued into the upstruck inverted-V-shaped member 11. The form of the device shown by Fig. 4 is also so shaped as to fit within the crown of a straw hat.
ICO
The brush 9 is formed with a thin curved grip 14 for convenience in holding the same in connection with one of the members and also to project the brush portion thereof far enough above the sweat-band to avoid interference or contact with the head of the wearer when the hat in which the device is disposed is applied.
When the improved attachment is used, it is withdrawn from the hat and held so that the mirror 5 will become practical as a refleeting means and the brush and comb alternately employed, as usual, by being disconnected from the opposite holders therefor. After completing the toilet the brush and comb can be easily secured to the improved attachment, and the latter again replaced in the hat. The Weight of the attachment will not materially increase the weight of the hat, and it is proposed to reduce the dimensions of the several parts to such an extent as to dispense with the least excess of metal without detracting from the necessary strength of the several parts.
Other changes in the form, proportions, dimensions, and minor details may be resorted to Without in the least departing from the principle of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A hat attachment for insertion in a hat comprising a mirror, and members adjustable in the mirror and provided with angular extremities having terminal means for holding a brush and comb.
2. An attachment for removable insertion in a hat comprising a mirror, and members telescopically adjustable in relation to each other and passing through a portion of the mirror and having depending terminals provided with means for holding a brush and a comb, the said terminals being insertible inside the sWeat-band of a ha t.
3. An attachment for removable insertion in a hat comprising a reflecting device, and adjustable members in relation to said reflecting device and provided with resilient terminal holders for removably retaining a brush and a comb.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALFRED OLSON.
