TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL F. PAGE, of Rutland, in the county of Rutland, und State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful improvement in Railway Chairs; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following speci'dcation, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, and
Figure 2 an end elevation of a chair provided with my invention.
The object of my invention or improvement is to enable the rail or rails to be readily removed from the main body of the'chair without the necessity of drawing the spikes by whioh'such body isfastened to the sleeper.
For this purpose I construct the main or body part A of the chair with two stationary lips a b, arranged so far apart as to enable the rail B to be dropped between them, or to be raised from between them, as circumstances may require. One of thelips isto Et to the upper surface of the iin-nge of the rail, the other being .to fit upon and project over the base c of a separate cup, G,`formed and arranged with reference to the rail, in manner as exhibited. After the rail or rails may have been placed within the part A of' the chair, the cup C is to be slid into place underneath the lip b, and may be held in position by means of keys d d 'going down through the lip b and notches e e, made in the edge of the cap, in manner as shown in Figure 3, which is a top view of the said cap. Each rail,B, may be recessed on its opposite sides, as shown atff, in Figure 4, which is view of one of such rails, such recesses being to receive corresponding projections gg, extending from the upper side ofthe bottom plate of the chair, the whole being as shown in Figure 5,-which is a top view ofthe part A, and also in Figure 6, which'is a transverse section of such part, A. Furthermore, the recess under-the lip b, instead of being in the same pla-ne with that surface of the part A on which the rail rests, is inclined or is arranged at an obtuse angle with reference thereto, in manneras represented. This causes the cap C, while being drawn by the keys toward therail, to descend also a little, so as to take a firm bearing on the rail flange.
I claim as my invention the combination as well as the arrangement of the cap C with the part A, made with the two lips a b, to receive the rnil and the cap, substantially as specified.
I also claim the arrtmgement of the recess of the lip b, at an obtuse angle withthe rail-supporting surface f the cha-ir, such chair being providedw'ith two lips, a b, and a cap, C, as set forth. v I
NATHANIEL F. PAGE.
