AUGUSTUS CHARLES ARGLES, OF NVIMBLEDON, ENGLAND.
PATENT OFFICE.
EXHlBlTlNG DEVICE.
SPECTFICATIdIiT part of Letters Patent No. 768,853, dated September 9, 1902.
Application filed March 7, 1902.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS CHARLES ARGLES, a subject of the King of Great Britbledon, Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exhibiting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is improved coin-freed apparatus whereby on the insertion of a coin the operator can ascertain the like to a given destination, station, or stopping-place.
My invention will be clearly understood from the following description aided by the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine. Fig. 2 is a view of a portion of the side of a machine, showing the sliding collar capable posing the time-table. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a machine. Fig. 4Lis a sectional plan of the'machine, theguide-plate and buffer-rod having part broken away; Fig. 5 is a front section of an apparatus inwhich the time-table is lowered for exposure. a Fig. 6 is which the time-ta'oie is revolved on 'a pivot for exposure.
My apparatus in its simplest form consists of a box 2, having within it a number of sheets or holders 1, each containing the times of trains from the particular station to another station on that railway. These sheets 1 are actuated simply by an arm 3 on a collar 8 surrounding a rod 4:, which rod is actuated by the operator by the handle 5, situate outside the apparatus, to lift the selected sheet 1 to expose it for view. The side or other part of the apparatus contains the names of all the stations, as at Fig. 2, and by sliding a pointer 6 to the station wanted the lugs 7, whichengage the collar 8 of the arm 3, will place the arm 'under or over the selected sheet 1 to be lifted, sothat on the actuation of the handle after the dropping in of a coin the sheet will be lifted, lowered, or revolved and exposed to View. Thus if an apparatus be fixed on Waterloo station and a pe'rsondesires to know the time of the next train to Aldershot all he has to do is to drop $erial No. 97,157. (No model.)
' coin-chute 10 into the pocket 11, fitted to the axle 4, will engage with the pin 12, and so lift the spring-controlled locking-lever 13 and allow the arm 3 to lift or lower the Aldershot sheet and expose same for the operator to see the time-table affixed thereon, the coinfalling into the money-till, a release of the handle allowing the sheet and the appliance to resume their normal condition. Indications, such as the platform the train starts from, advertisements can be made upon the sheets, and the whole appliance maybe used for purposes other than indicating the time of trains, omnibnses, and the like.
According to Figs. 1 to.5 the sheets 1 have legs 14 at one side sliding in grooves of a plate 14, the other edges of the plates 1 sliding in grooves of a plate 15 at the other side,
so that a proper movement is efiected withbeing returned, as in Fig. 5, to its normal position by a spring 17. 18 is a rubber-covered bufier-rod, against which theplates rest when exposed. In Fig. 5 the arm 3 is returned by a spiral spring (not shown) encircling a portion of the rod 4.
.Any coin freed mechanism can be employed, the feature of the invention being arranging the times of trains or conveyances from 'one station to another upon separate sheets and exposing the desired sheets after the insertion of a coin to indicate the times of starting of such conveyances.
What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1 1. In an exhibiting vdevice,-the combination with a casing provided with an exposure-opening, an elongated slot and a plurality of indicating-sheets arranged therein, of a rotatable rod mounted in said casing, a collar adjustable upon said rod, means operating in said slot'for adjusting the said collar, an arm integral with said collar, and means engaged and operated by said arm when said rod is rotated for exposing the said sheets through the said opening.
2. In an exhibiting device, the combination with a casing provided with an exposure-opening, an elongated slot and a plurality of indicating-sheets arranged therein, of a rotatable rod mounted in said casing, a collar adjustable upon said rod, means operating in said slot for adjusting the said collar, an arm integral with said collar, means engaged and operated by said arm when said rod is rotated for exposing the said sheets through the said opening, and a handle connected to said rod.
3. In an exhibiting device, a casing pro- Vided With an exposure-opening, a series of
