Patented Sept. .9, I902.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS E. DURNER, OF EVANSVILLE, WISCONSIN.
HARROW-DISK SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,802, dated September 9,1902.
Application filed February 10, 1902.. Serial No. 93,307; (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS E. DURNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evansville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrow-Disk Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple, economical, and efficient machines for rapid even sharpening of harrow-disks without removal of the same from their shafts, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a front elevation of a harrow-disk-sharpening machine in accordance with my invention having parts thereof broken and in section, as indicated by lines 1 1 in the second figure; Fig. 2, a plan view of the machine, partly broken and in horizontal section, as indicated by line 2 2 in the first figure; and Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section of said machine, indicated by line 3 3 in said first figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates each of a pair of parallel beams, spaced apart and connected at their ends by standards B O of cast metal. In practice the frame comprising the beams and standards aforesaid maybe set on a bench or trestles or provided with legs. The frame-standard B is provided with a bearing for a live-spindle D,
and a tail-screwE is adjustable in bracket 0 opposite said spindle. The bracketB is also provided with a bearing for a drive-spindle F, that is turned by a crank G or its mechanical equivalent, and a sprocket-wheel H is shown fast on live-spindle D, connected by a link beltI with a sprocket-pinion J, fast on the drive-spindle but it is practical to substitute spur-gear for the link belt and sprocketgear. The inner end of the live-spindle is made angular, and a coupling or chuck K, slippedthereon, engages a nut 27, that is commonly on an end of a shaft L, upon which a series of barrow-disks M are arranged, the other end of the shaft being engaged by the point of. the tail-screw E aforesaid. It may be found convenient and desirable to provide each machine with a set of interchangeable chucks, designed to fit various sizes of shaftnuts. One of the beams A is shown provided with longitudinal side guides Nfor a slide P, that straddles said beam, the inner depending portion of the slide being flanged to catch under the adjacent guide. Dovetailed in the slide P transversely thereof is a plate Q, engaged by the lower end of a swivel-post R, that extends up through a sleeve S, supported on the plate. An adj usting-screw T has the threaded portion thereof engaged with a depending front ear 0 of plate Q, the inner end of thescrew being, in the form of a journal upset-in a countersunk aperture in the front side of the slide P aforesaid. The shank d of a cutting-tool U engages a vertical slot in post R and diametrically opposite notches in sleeve S, a set-screw V being arranged in the upper outer end of said post to impinge against the tool-shank. The plate Q is shown provided with an eye-lug e, and a leverW is stopped in this lug. An-antifriction-roller X is hung in an open swell portion of lever W,
andin practice a harrow-disk is caught be-.
tween the roller and the aforesaid cuttingtool, pressure of said roller being regulated by said lover. The tool-holder, comprising plate Q, post R, sleeve S, and set-screw T. is adjusted on slide P to accommodate the tool U to harrow-disks of various diameters, and said slide being loose longitudinally of the machine automatic compensation is had'for irregularities in a rotating disk or wabble of the same on its shaft when. caught between said tool and the lever-controlled roller X, whereby spring of said disk is prevented and even cut of the aforesaid tool assured. To change the tool from one to another of a series of barrow-disks on a shaft hung in the machine, the slide P is unhooked from its inner guide and with the tool-holder lifted clear of the machine-frame and replaced in new position. .7 I
While I have shown a practical form of a machine embodying my invention, the structural details of same may be varied somewhat without departure from the scope of said invention.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A barrow-disk sharpener comprising a frame, means for chucking and rotating a shaft with a series of barrow-disks thereon between standards of the frame, a slide straddling a longitudinal frame-beam in hook connection therewith, a plate guided on the slide in a direction transversely of said frame, means for regulating adjustment of the plate, a post in swivel connection with said plate, a sleeve on the post, a cutting-tool having a shank engaging a vertical post-s10t and sleevenotches, a set-screw in the upper end of said post opposing the toolshank, a hand-lever for which the aforesaid plate is provided with a step, and an antifriction-roller carried by the lever opposite the cutting-tool.
2. A barrow-disk sharpener comprising a frame, means for chucking and rotating a shaft with a series of harroW-disks thereon between frame-standards, a slide straddling a longitudinal frame-beam in hook connection therewith, a plate guided on the slide in a direction transversely of said frame, an adjustin -screw having a journal end in said slide and its threaded portion engaging an ear of the plate, a post in swivel connection with the aforesaid plate, a sleeve on the post, a cutting-tool having a shank engaging a vertical post-slot and sleeve-notches, a setscrew in the upper end of said post opposing the tool-shank, a hand-lever for which the aforesaid plate is provided with a step, and an an tifriction-rollcr carried by the lever opposite the cutting-tool.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Evansville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS E. DURNER.
