Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE THOMAS KNOVLES, ROBERT KNOVLES, AND SAMUEL KNOWLES, 0F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT INTIVIACHINE FOR MOLDING PULLEYSY.V
Specification forming part oi' Letters Patent No. 70,864, dated November 12, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, THOMAS KNowLEs,
ROBERT KNowLEs, and SAMUEL KNowLEs,
all of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Machine or Apparatus for Molding Wheels, and other objects or work ot' a curvilinear character, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, .and in which- Figures l and 2 represent front and side elevations of an apparatus or apparatuses in part illustration of our invention, and'Fig. 3 a plan of the same.
Ourinvention seeks to supply a desideratum long wanting in foundry-work; and consists in a machine or apparatus constructed to mold with accuracy and precision, from and by the use of a mere segment as a pattern, wheels and pulleys, or the rim portions thereof, of'various descriptions and sizes, and other work ot' curvilinear character, said machine being of a portable character, and embracing the following elements, to wit: a vertical post or pillar capable of being driven or inserted into the sand, horizontally adjustable ram arranged thereon, and carrying a vertically-adjustable similar device, which serves to hold the segment or pattern, and dividing-gear for regulating the swing of the horizontal ram, to repeat the impression of the segment in the sand in continuation of the impression previously made by it.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A is a post or pillar, the lower end of which is suitably formed to admit of its'easy entrance, by driving or otherwise, into the sand or tloor of the foundry, and carrying at itsupper end ahead, B, capable of horizontal rotation, and to which is secured a bed, C, that serves to carry a horizontally-adjustable ram, Dhav ing a sliding motion transversely to the axial line of the pillar, and which motion or adjustment may be effected by a screw, rack and pinion, or other suitable means. The bed G is shown provided with a bracket, a, which carries an endless screw, E, working into a worm-wheel, F, fast to the pillar, and the shaft of the screw represented as having on it-one,
G, of a series of change-wheels, G G1 G2, of
wheel, G2, being adjustablyhungon a shaft, l),
carried by the horizontal ram D, and on which shaft may behunga dividing-wheel, G3, having gearing with it a stopper or catch, c, so that on turning the shaft b by crank or handle, a fixed and divided swing or set may be given to the bed C and ram D, to provide for the adjustment of the segmental pattern to repeat or continue the impression in the sand, as hereinafter more fully explained.
Vhen required toswing the ram D otherwise, or than as subject to such adjustment, then the wheel G2 may be slipped out of gear, or will be thrown out of gear by the transverse movement or sliding action of the ram, so as to sweep or turn the latter with facility and dispatch; but after adjustment of said ram to any required distance at its forward end from the center of the post, according to the diameter of the wheel or curvature of the object to be molded, or, rather, when ready to make the impression in the sand, then the wheel G2 should be put in gear with the wheel Gl. Any other system or combination of `di viding-gear may, if desired, be adopted. The forward end of the rain D carries avertical table', H, in which is arranged and 4may be vertically adjustable therein, or on, by screw or otherwise, a slide or second ram, I, furnished with a foot at its lower end, to which may be secured the segmental pattern. A scale or measure may be attached to the apparatus to determine the radial adjustment of the horizontal ram D.
The moldlnay be made either in the open sand or in boxes 5 and as the rams occupy the same relative position to the pillar, whether the latter be strictly vertical or be set more or less inclined, no great particularity is requisite in inserting the apparatus in the sand. i j
Prior to molding, the sand may be leveled, or a bed formed in it by means of a sweep having a slotted connection with a swinging arm, J, turning freely on the post, after which the sweep is removed, and the segmental pattern being' secured to the foot of the vertical ram I, the horizontal raln D is adjusted radially to the pillar, according to the diameter of the wheel required, or curvature of the segment, when the vertical ram I is lowered, and the necessary impression made in the sand, following which the latter-mentioned ram is raised, and a circular adjustment on the post made of the horizontal ram D, as regulated by the dividing-gear, for a distance corresponding' to the length of the segment or pattern, which is again lowered by depressing the ram I, and so on, till the whole Wheel or mold is formed. It' the casting is designed to he a Wheel, then the arms and center portion may regards keeping up the continuity in the mold. It, of course, is equally applicable to molding small as large wheels, plain or toothedfwith or Without flanges, pulleys, segments, or other objects of a curvilinear character or shape, and of which the pattern forms a section or division.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A machine or apparatus for molding wheels or other Work of curvilinear character, having for its elements a pillar or post, A, horizontally-swinging,` and radially-adjustable ram D, carrying a vertically-adjustable ram or patternholder, I, and dividing-gear for adjusting the swing of the horizontal ram, substantially as specified. y
