TO `ALL-WlzIOM-.Il MAY CONCERN :v v p Be it known that THEQDORE E. JEWELL, deceased, late of Brooklyn, 'Kings county, ew York, did during his lifetime invent a new and improved'Yoke for'Grain-Elevators; endl, ELIZA JnNEJEWELL, of Brooklyn,
aforesaid, administratrx'ot the estate oi said Tnnononn E. JnwnLI., dol'hereb'y' declare that the following is a 3 full, clear, and/exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forminga partei' this specification, in which-'f Figure l'represents a sectional side elevation of this improved grain-elevator. .Figure'Z is an end elevation of fthe same. i
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view of the same, the planeet' section being indicated by the line a: ze, iig. 2. i A Y I Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l This invention relates to a new manner of constructing and arranging the sliding yoke of a grainelevatol, 'and consists first in making the yoke of cast iron instead of wood, as is heretoforealways done; and second, in theiuse .of adjustable guides between the yoke and the wooden frame, whereby the yoke can be accurately fitted between the frame, so as to slide freely, and whereby inequalities arising from the expansion 'or contraetion'oi` the frame or yoke, or either, can be regulated, .i
A represents the 'stationary frame of an elevator, to be secured near the edge of a pier or wharf. B is the sliding yoke, suspended by means of a rope, I, from thepper part-:of the frame A, and earryinglthe shaft C, over which the elevator-aprony D passes in a case, E, and upon which a pulley, F, is mounted, bymeans of which it receives its motionfrom a band, G. The yoke B is made of cast iron, and the bearingsforthe shaft C and for the friction-pulleys H H, by which the belt is stretched, are secured to it, as is clearly shown in fig. 1. The yoke is fitted between two upright posts a a of the frame A, said posts being provided with projecting tenons 6, on their inner sides. The yoke is 'providedovith a ange, e, on eachl end, said'iiange lapping over one side ofl the tenen b, (see iig. 8.) By means of bolts cl d, plates e e are secured-to the liangcs e, said platesoverlapping the other side of tenon Z7, so that the latter is tted between the flanges e and plates e, as shown. The bolts d pass through lugs z', projecting from the end of the yoke. Between the lang'es e and plates e, and between two lugs z' are inserted gibs or bars j', which are held in place by the lugs di, of which one is above and the other below each gib, as in iig. 2. The gibs f form the bearings of the yoke against the tenons 6, and can'b'e adjusted towards or from the tenons by means of set-screws g, which pass. through the plates h, forming the edges of the yoke, as is clearlyshown in igs. 2 and 3. As the tenons swell or shrink, the gibs are adjusted by means of the set-screws g, so as to make the yoke slide freely, without allowing the same too much play. The gibs can be made of wood or metal, as may be desired. The main advantage of this invention is, that when the guides f are worn, they can be removed by taking oil' the nuts d and plates e, and can then be replaced by new ones, without even taking'the yoke oit` the frame, while the yokes new in use become uselessl as soon as the edges are worn. The lugs z' may reah to the tenori if desired, but I prefer to have them not reach the same, so that only the gibs are in contact with the tenons b. Having thus describedthe invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Making-the yokes of grain-elevators of cast iron, constructed substantially as and for the purpose herein shownand described;
2. The adjustable guide arrangement at the ends et a metal yoke, when consisting of the 'anges c, plates e, gibs or guidesf, and set-screws g, all made and operating substantially as described, in combination with the tenons I) on the uprights of the stationary frame A, arranged as described. i
