To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WALTER FAVREAU, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Slotting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a slotting machine for making mortises, depressions, slots and the like in a plate of metal, wood or any other material.
It is especially applicable for making the mortises for boxes and their covers, in which are to be located the hinges for the same.
In the accompanying drawings which exemplify the invention, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a slotting machine, with a partial section as on the line 1, 1 of Fig. 14, Fig. 2 shows a plan view of a guide frame, Fig. 3 is a front elevation of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 2 on the line 4 4, Fig. 5 represents a front view of a secondary crosshead with a fragmentary view of a pair of links, Fig. 6 is an end view of Fig. 5, Fig'. 7 represents a partial end view and section of Fig. 1 on the line 7, 7, Fig. 8 is a top view of a cross-head, Fig. 9 shows a crosssection of Fig. 8 on the line 9 9, Fig. 10 is an end view of Fig. 9, Fig. 11 is an enlarged edge view of one of the saws with its arbor and accompanying pulley, the latter being partly in section, Fig. 12 represents an elevation of an idler pulley with its immediate appurtenances, Fig. 13 is a side view of Fig. 12, Fig. 14 shows a top view of the table of the machine and appurtenances and Fig. 15 is a top view of the platform.
The machine exemplifying the invention is shown to consist of a table 20 with legs 21. Over the table is flexibly supported the plat form 22 on the springs 23, which latter are fastened to the platform by the bolts 24 and bear on the top face of the table. Longitudinal openings 25 are formed in the ends of the springs, which engage with pins 26 extending from the said table. An opening 27 extends longitudinally in the platform 22 for the operation of circular saws to be presently described. The platform also contains dovetailed grooves 28 for the feet 29`of the guide 30. Lugs 31 extend from the guide 30 and which are threaded for screws 32, the ends of which latter canvbear against the face of the platform 22. clamped to the said platform by means of the screws 36.
Extending from the platform 22 are the guide pins 37 which engage with the adjustable guide sleeves 38, that are threaded on their outer cylindrical surfaces and have hexagonal `lianges 39. The sleeves can be secured at different levels in the screw sleeves 40 that are supported on its table.
In the table 20 are formed openings for the guide frame 41 having the pockets 42 and guides 43 g cross-heads 44 with side bearings 45 engage with the guides 43. Bearings with caps 46 .in the cross-heads support the arbors 47. Saws 48 and the grooved pulleys 49 are secured to the said arbors 47.
To the legs 21 are fastened the crossstringers 50 which support the longitudinal stringer 51. Journal bearing brackets V80 and 81 to be described are supported on the Stringer 51, and bearings 52 extend from the lower face of the table 20. Vertical shafts 53 with the threaded portions 54 are supported in the bearings 52 and in bearings 82 and 83, of the brackets 80 and 81. Threaded supports 55 engage with the threaded portions 54, and a motor platform 56 connects the supports 55. A motor 57 with armature shaft 458, and electric conductors 59 are carried on the platform 56. The armature shaft 58 of the motor is extended on one side and is supported by the journal bracket 60. A link 61 with cap 62 extends betweenthe armature shaft 58 and one of thearbors 47, and a second link 63 with cap 64 extends from the said armature shaft to the other of the arbors 47.
A double grooved pulley 65 is secured to the armature shaft 58 and a pulley 49 is fastened to each of the arbors 47 as already stated. Belts 66 connect the pulley 65 with the pulleys 49.
ln the guide 'frame 41 is formed a central pocket 67 with the side openings 68. A cross-head 69 slides in the pocket 67 and a journal pin 70 is carried on the said crosshead 69. Secondary links 89 connect the pin 70 with the links 61 and 63.
On each of the vertical shafts 53 is fastened a bevel gear 71, and one of said bevel gears meshes with the bevel gear 72, and the other bevel gear 71 meshes with the bevel gear 73. The journal bracket 80 has thereon the bearing 84 for one of the vertical shafts 53, and the bearing 85 for the horizontal shaft 86. The journal bracket 81 has formed therewith the bearing 87 for the shaft 86. The bevel gears 72 and 78 are supported on the horizontal shaft 86 which carries a hand wheel 88.
On the platform 56 are bolted the brackets 90 in which are pivoted the arms 91, in the free ends of which latter are journaled the idler pulleys 92. A screw 93 can be clamped in different positions in the lug 94 of each of the brackets 90, so as to cause the idler pulleys 92 to bear against the belts 66.
To operate the invention the guides on the flexible platform 22 are set to bring the obj ect when placed on said platform in proper position over the opening 27, so that the saws will cut slots at the proper places in said material. The guide sleeves 38 are located at their roper levels to gage the depths of the mortises. The saws are placed the requisite distance apart by raising or lowering the motor platform 56, by means of the hand wheel 88. When the motor platform is moved the armature shaft 58 moves in a vertical line, which movement actuates the links 61 and 63, and they in turn move the cross-heads 44, that support the arbors 47 of the circular saws, so that the latter approach or recede from each other, and are thereby located in proper operative positions. The links 61 and 63 are maintained at equal distances from a vertical plane passing through the axis of the armature shaft 58, by
. means of the links 89, the cross-head 69 connected with the latter links having a slight vertical movement in the pocket 67.
Having described my invention, l claim:
1. In a slotting machine the combination of a table, a platform over the table, flexible connections between the table and the platform, threaded shafts under the table, a support carried on the threads of .each of said threaded shafts, a second platform connecting the supports, means to turn the shafts in unison and thereby move the second platform to different levels, a motor on the second platform, saws slidably journaled on the table, means to maintain the arbors of the saws and the armature shaft of the motor at bors journaled on the cross-heads, a circular saw supported on each of said arbors, a pulley on each arbor, an adjustable platform under the table, a motor on the latter platform, linked connections between the shaft of the motor and the arbors of the saws so that the arbors of the saws will move in horizontal lines, when the armature shaft of the motor is moved in a vertical line.
3. In a slotting machine the combination of a table, a platform having an opening thereon flexibly supported over the table, guide pins extending from the platform` guide sleeves engaging with said pins and adjustably supported in the table, vertical shafts supported under the table, threaded portions on the vertical shafts, supports carried on the threaded portions of the vertical shafts, a platform on the said threaded supports, a motor on the latter platform with an extended shaft, guides onthe table, cross-heads on said guides, arbors journaled in the cross-heads, circular saws on the arbors, links connecting the shaft of the motor with each of the arbors, a pocket on the table, a cross-head in said pocket, a pin in the latter cross-head, secondary links connectingl the latter pin with the links extending from the armature shaft, a pulley on the shaft of the motor and a pulley on each of the arbors, belting connecting the pulleys on the armature shaft with the pulleys on the arbors` 4. In a slotting machine the combination of a table, a platform fiexibly supported over the table, means to control the amount of deflection of the platform relatively to the table, guides on the table, cutting means slidably supported in said guides to engage an object supported on the said platform, a motor under the table, connections between the motor and the cutting means, means to move the motor in a vertical line to thereby move the cutting means in a horizontal plane.
5. ln a slotting machine the combination of a table, a platform havin an opening flexibly supported over the tab e, means to control the amount of defiection of the platform, cross-heads adjustably supported on the table, arbors journaled on the cross-heads, a circular saw supported on each arbor, vertical shafts j ournaled under the table, a threaded portion on each of said vertical shafts, a support on each of said threaded portions, a motor platform connecting the threaded supports, a motor on the motor platform, an armature shaft for the motor means between the motor and the saws to actuate the latter, a link extending from each arbor to the said armature shaft a bevel gear on each of the vertical shafts, a horizontal shaft journaled below the motor platform, a bevel gear fastened on each end of said horizontal shaft, the bevel gears on the latter shaft meshing with the bevel gears on the vertical shafts, and a hand wheel on the said horizontal shaft.
6. ln a slotting machine the combination of a table, a platform flexibly supported over the table, cross-heads adjustably supported on the table, arbors liournaled on the crossheads, a saw fastened to each arbor, a motor platform adjustably supported under the table, a motor on the latter platform, an armature shaft for the motor, a pulley-on the armature shaft of the Inotor, and pulleys on county of New York and State of New York the arbors, belts connecting the latter pulleys this 18th day of December A.
