Description

No. 708,344. Patented Sept. 2,' I902. w. F. GRIMES.
COMBINED'DUOR CHECK AND BURGL AR ALARM.
I [Application filed July 8, 1902.] (N0 Model.)
tunic,
WVILLIAM F. GRIMES, OF C AR EGIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED DOOR CE-IECK' AND BURGLAR-ALARWI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,3d4, dated September 2, 1902.
Application filed July 8, 1902.
useful improvements in combined locks and burglar-alarms, and has for its object theprovision of novel means whereby a door is securely locked in position, but when it is endeavored to open the same a gong will be sounded, giving the alarm that a burglar is endeavoring to open the door.
The presentinvention further contemplates to provide a device of the above-described character that will be extremely simple inconstruction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this class that may be easily placed in an operative position and when placed in this position will not interfere with the movement of the door.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in'detail reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower portion of the door with my improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side'elevation of the device, showing the door in vertical section. I
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents a door, and 2 the floors. In the latter is countersunk a plate 8, having formed therein a central opening 4. This plate also has formed therein openings 5 to receive fastening means, such as screws 6. A plate 7is rigidly secured to the inner face of the door, said plate carrying guides 8 8,-in which is slidin gly secured the T-headf) of the curved rod Serial No. 114,747. (No model.)
10, the lower end of which is fastened in the openings 4 of the plate 3. A lever 11 is pivotally secured at 12 upon the plat-e 7, said lever extending between the guides 8 and above the T-shaped head 9. A gong 14 is also secured upon the plate 7, said gong having arranged therein a spring to operate the same when tripped by the lug 15. A hook 16 is also secured to the door and is adapted to receive the lower or engaging end of the curved rod 10 when placed 'in an inoperatit e position;
The operation of my improved device is as follows: WVhen it is endeavored to open the door, the T-head 9 of the curved rod 10 will be forced upwardly in the guides 8, thereby actuating the lever, which will trip the lug 15 of the gong, thereby releasing the spring, which will operate the same. It will be noted the door will be allowed but a slight movement, the T-head 9 riding up in the guides 8 and forming a substantial lock for the door. When it is desired to place the device in an inoperative position, the end is released from engagementin the plate 3, turned upwardly, and secured in the book 16, which will retain the curved rod in an inoperative position. It will also be noted that the device may be readily applied to windows, transoms, and the like,
details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the type set forth, comprising a plate with guides thereon, a curved rod having its lower end removably secured in the floor, and carrying a T-head on its upper end operating in said guides, a gong, and means actuated by said T-head for tripping the gong.
2. A device of the type set forth, consisting of guides, a rod having its lower end remov ably secured in the floor and carrying a head on its other end operating in said guides, at gong, and pivoted means adapted to be actuated'by said head of the rod for tripping the gong.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
