UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. CRAIG, OF BOSGOE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MIN E-VCAR; RAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent N0. 707,999, datedAugust 26, 19 02.
7 Application filed October 16, 1901. Serial No. 78,779. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. CRAIG, a-citi zen of the United States, residing at Roscoe,
in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented anew and useful Improvement in Mine-Car Rails, of which improvement the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail-joints, and re lates more particularly to that class wherein. the use of fish-plates is entirely dispensed with.
The invention consists in the novel combi nation and arrangement ofparts to be here-.
indicates the rail, and 2 represents the 191 tallic tie, having openings 3 3 formed therein for the reception of bolts or other fastening means. 1
The reference-numeral 4 represents an innor clamp, having an inclined portion 5 formed integral therewith to engage the base of the rail, said inner clamp having also formed therein an opening 6, through which extends a bolt 7, which is secured in position by means of the nut 8, engaging the screw-threaded portion of the bolt.
The reference-numeral 9 indicates the outer clamp, having a slot 10 formed therein and carrying an integral fish-plate 11, forming a portion of the chair.
The reference-numeral 12 indicates a bolt secured to one of the openings 3, extending through the slot 10 and held in position by means of a nut 14.."
The manner of operating myimprovedrailjoint will be'readily understood by referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, where the movement of the inner clamp is shown and illustrated in dotted lines.
It will be noted that numerous advantages are obtained by the herein-described construction, which will allow for the expansion and contraction of the'rails caused by the differences in temperature.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A rail-joint comprising in combination with a chair 9 having a transverse slot 10 and an upwardly-projecting portion adapted to be held against the under face of the tread of the rail, a swinging plate 4 and retaining pivotal bolt, the'free end of said plate 4 being rounded and adapted to web of a rail as set forth. 1
In testimony V whereof I- have hereunto signed'my name in thepresence of two subscribing witnesses.
