IMPRovED BARREL-COVER.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, CALVIN BIRD, of Dorchester, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement-in the vConstruction. and Manufacture of Barrel-Covers for ndel inv families, grocery stores, and other similar situations; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the,accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i f

In portable barrel-covers, as heretofore constructed, the handle has generally been formed by cutting a slot'- for the fingers in a projecting cleat on top of the barrel-cover, extending entirely or partially across the same; and as barrel-covers are generally constructed of two or more pieces of boards, this cleat fastens and contributes to the strength of the cover; but inasmuch as it projects above the smooth surface of the cover, it is inconvenient in families, grocery stores, and other places where'it would oftentimes be a great convenience to have the barrelcovers Husband smooth on top, so that other'articles might b e readily placed on the same. My improvement obviates these objections. In 'the drawings Figure 1 is a top view.

a represents the barrel-cover proper, b the rim or ange. In the centre of the cover, I make an opening of four or five inches in diameter.' I then lapply a metallic cleat, c, secured to the under side ofthe barreleover, whereby it strengthens the cover as eifectually as the ordinary cleat on top. This metallic clat, as shown by the drawing, is bent upward at d in the central aperture, and comes flushwith the top of the same, and forms the ush hand-le. I thencover the central aperture underneath with .a metallic guard-plate, e, the periphery of the same being tacked to the underside of the barrel-cover. This plate I ordinarily make somewhat convex, as shown by the drawing, in order to gain some more space than the mere thickness of' the board of the cover for the fingers when taking hold of the Hush-handle. y

I do not confine my claim to the precise details' of construction above recited, whch,it is evident, may be varied in many ways Without departing from,l the distinguishing features of my improvement; as, for instance, the handle, guard-plate, and strengthening-cleat may be formed of a single piece of cast metal, or other materials than metal may be used for the several parts; but I claim, as an improvement in the construction of barrelcoversl i The combination of the Hush handle with the strengthening-.cleat and guard-plate,substantially as described.
