WILLIAM T. SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WOVEN FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,871, dated August 26, 1902.
Application filed February 17, 1902. Serial No. 94,464. (No specimens.)
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWVILLIAM T. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in WVoven Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of woven fabrics in which are combined party-colored face weft-threads, back weft-threads of spun yarn, stuifer warp-threads separating the face and back weft-threads, and binder warpthreads tying together said face and back weft-threads, the object of my invention be ing to produce a fabric of this character having on the face a pattern formed by partycolored chenille weft-threads and onthe back a pattern in imitation of matting and formed by the back weft-threads beaten up so closely as to prevent any showing of the chenille face weft-threads between them and presenting either a plain face or one having stripes of color across the same produced by the binding warp-threads.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an exaggerated section taken in the direction of the warp of a fabric produced in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a View of a portion of the back of the fabric, illustrating the striped effect before referred to.
The fabric is composed of face Weft-threads 1 of party-colored chenille, back weft-threads 2 of spun yarn, stuffer warp-threads 3 interposed between the face weft-threads and back weft-threads, and binder warp -threads 4, which serve to tie the face and back weftthreads together and con fine the stu ffer warpthreads between them. The back weft-threads are ofsuch sizeand are beateniup so closely that the chenille face weft-threads are not visible between them. Hence these back weft-threads impart to the back of the fabric a color or tint which may remain plain, but which I prefer to modify by using binding warpthreads of colors differing from each other and from the color of the back weft-threads, thereby producing upon the back of the fabric the effect of stripes running in the direction of the warp. I thus impart to the back of the fabric a matting effect which renders the fabric reversible, either face of the same being acceptable.
Binding warp-threads of the thickness necessary to produce a striping effect upon the back of the fabric can be used without afiecting the face pattern, owing to the fact that on the face of the fabric said-warp-threads are covered and hidden by the chenille fur of beaten up.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A woven fabric composed of party-colored chenille face weft-threads, back weft-threads of spun yarn, and binding warp-threads uniting the face andback weft-threads, said back weft-threads being large and soft whereby they can be beaten up so closely as to prevent any showing of chenille threads on the back of the fabric, therebyimparting to the latter a matting effect, substantially as specified.
2. A woven fabric composed of party-colored chenille face weft-threads, back weft-threads of spun yarn, beaten up so closely as to prevent any showing of chenille threads on the back of the fabric and binding warp'threads uniting the face and back weft-threads, said binding warp-threads being covered and hidden by the chenille fur of the face Weftthreads and being of color or colors differing from and contrasting with that of the back weft-threads, whereby a striped effect upon the back of the fabric is produced, substantially as specified.
3. A woven fabric composed of party-colored chenille face weft-threads, back weft-threads of spun yarn, stuffer warp-threads separating the face and back weft-threads, and binding warp-threads uniting the face and back weft-threads, said back weft-threads being large and soft whereby they can be beaten up so closely as to prevent any showing of chenille threads on the back of the fabric, thereby imparting to the lattera matting effect, substantially as specified.
toast-1 that of the back weft-threads whereby a striped efiect upon the back of the fabric is produced, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM T. SMITH.
