UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN H. GLEDHILL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PILE OR PLUSH FABRIC.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN H. GLED- HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pile or Plush Fabrics, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to woven pile or plush fabrics, such as carpets and the like, used for furnishing, and the object of the invention is to simplify and economize in the weaving of such fabrics.
Various combinations of colored, uncolored or varicolored pile warp threads, stufier warpl threads, weft threads and binding warp t reads may be used in carrying out the invention, but in every instance the pile warp threads pass from the pile face through the fabric and are bound around the weft threads on the back of the fabric, thus forming a fiat back surface similar in material and design to the pile face, but, of course, without ile.
Broadly statec the invention consists of a pile or lush fabric, com osed of pile or plush warp t reads, face we t threads and back weft threads se arated by stuffer warp threads, and bincing warp threads, the pile or plush warp threads assing through from face to back and interfbcking with the face and back weft threads, all as I will proceed now more particularly to set forth and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a conventional longitudinal section of a fabric, wherein one row of pile warp tufts engage four picks of weft. Fig. 2 is a similar view, wherem a fabric like that of Fig. 1 has two sets of binding warp threads instead of one.
The pile or plush warp threads are designated 1, the face weft threads 2, the back weft threads 3, the stuffer warp threads 4, and the binding war threads 5 and 6. The pile or plush warp t reads may be colored,

uncolored or varicolored or combination of these.
In the fabric of Fig. 1, the pile or plush war threads passing through the face and bac i, are bound around alternate shots or picks of weft threads on the face and two on the back, with the stuffer warp threads between, and the binding warp threads engaged by every shot or pick. In the fabric of Fig. 2, the pile or plush warp threads are arranged as in Fig. 1, but two sets of binding warp threads 5 and 6 are used, and these engage alternate weft threads on face and back.
By my invention the pile or lush warp threads are passed through the ooting and I n 4 I the fabric similar 1n material and design to the face of the fabric, but without pile.
By this invention may be produced a fabric similar in appearance to oriental rugs and carpets, and in which the ile tufts are evenly distributed and secure y bound in the fabric, and the flat back has the same design and colors as the pile face.
The pile tufts may be left uncut, or they may be cut.
What I claim is A woven pile or plush fabric, composed of colored, uncolored, or varicolored ile or plush warp threads, face and bac weft threads, stuffer warp threads interposed between the weft threads, and binding war threads in one set binding all the we t threads, there being one row of pile tufts to every four shots or picks of weft threads e ually distributed on face and back, the pi e warp threads passing from the pile face throu h the fabric and bound around the weft threads on the back, thereby forming a flat surface similar in material and design to the pile face but without pile.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 30 day of October A. D. 1905.
BENJAMIN I-I. GLEDI-IILL.
