Description

UNITED STATES;
PATENT' Fries.
UGO ALVISI, OF' ROME, ITALY.
[)ETONATING'COMPOUND.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,493, dated August 19,1902.
Original application filed December 17 1898, Serial No. 599,562. Divided and this application filed October 10, 1901. Serial No. 78,245. (No specimens.').-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, UGO ALVISI, a; subject of the King of Italy, residing at 12 Via Carlo Alberto, Rome, in the Kingdom of Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detonating Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
'This invention relates to an improved detonating compound, as. hereinafter described.
It is common practice to add to the fulminate of mercury, when such is'employed for charging detonators, saltpeter or chlorates, and so on, for the purpose of obtaining dilfersent eifects as may be desired for special requirements.
I have manufactured detonating materials specially for use in chargingcaps (detonators) by mixing perchlorate of ammonium to the fnlminate of mercury. -The mixtureof 17.20 per cent. of perchlorate of ammonium with 83.80 of fnlminate of mercury produces the maximum effect, and I have found it to be the most powerful of detonators, both as to its range of explosive force and its breaking power. It may be employed in all cases where ordinarily fulminate of mercury is used as a detonatorfor example, for firing dyna--- mite, nitroglycerin, nitrocellulose, picric acid, &c., When the explosive--dynamite, for. example-itself contains perchlorate of ammonium, the charge of fulminate of mercury in the detonator may be reduced. Supposing we have dynamite of the following composition 1. nitroglycerin, seventyfive; soluble cotton, (collodiom) five; cellulose,'five; perchlorate of ammonium, fifteen. The most convenient detonator for detonating the same is that which contains only sixty per cent. of fulminate of mercury and the rest perchlorate of ammonium. In other cases-for example, with 'or- 40 perchlorate may be increased by reducing that of the fulminate. Obviouslyto this mixture may be addedother oxidizing and combustible substances, care being taken, however, to avoid potassium salts-for example, saltpeter, chlorate of potassium, (except perchlorate of potassium)which would react with the perchlorate of ammonium and produce compouudswhich would either be unstable or deliquescent. These mixtures are prepared in the ordinary manner similar to that adopted,
for example, for preparing mixtures of fulminate of mercury and chlorate of potassium, and the caps or detonators are charged therewith in the ordinary way. It is preferable to provide metallic caps with an internal lining to prevent the mixture from coming into contact with the metal. The detonators manufactured with these mixtures are employed like ordinary detonators, and they may be fired either by means of atape-prim'er, percussion-fuse, or by the electric spark.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A detonatiug compound containing fulminate of mercury monium.
2; Adetonatingcompoundcontaining17.20 per cent.of perchlorate of ammonium and 83.80 per cent. of fulminate of mercury.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of September, 190.1.
