PAPER-BAG FAsTENEa.
s'rnorrroArIoN forming part of teeters Patent No. momma August 12, 1190a Application filed'J'anuary 14, 1902. Serial No. 89,726. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lewis township, in the county of Northumberland and StateofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Bag Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin paper-bag fasteners; and its object is to provide a simple inexpensive device for application to paper bags which can be easily manipulated and be effectual in the performance of the functions required.
With the foregoing objects in View my invention consists in a cardboard blank having an open slot at each end and adapted to be secured on the outer surface of the paper bag in connection with a slightly-tapered tongue secured to the opposite surface of the bag at or near the mouth and adapted to be held by frictional contact between the edges of the open slots, whereby the mouth of the bag is held closed against accidental opening.
It further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective, showing the bag open; and Fig. 2 shows it closed and fastened.
A represents a paper bag of ordinary construction, such as commonly used for the sale and delivery of groceries.
The numeral 2 indicates a piece of cardboard or similar material of the required stiffness and cut to the desired size, which size of course might differ in accordance with the size of the bag or to suit the requirements. This cardboard is out with an open slot at each end, and these slots 1 and 3 may be of different form,as, indeed, they are indicated in the drawings. .The essential thing to pro-' vide isthat these open slots should have sharp angles 4: 4 at their sides and overlapping lips 5 5, which extend inward-1y toward each other in pairs at the outer ends of the slots. A
tongue B is pasted or otherwise secured to the paper bag at the tongue preferably, has a slight taper opposite surface of the mouth thereof, and this throughout its length, as indicated. The tongue itself is of sufficient length to reach through the two open slots when the mouth acute angles with a frictional contact adequate to prevent the tongue from pulling out easily. The tongue is then pulled through and inserted in similar fashion beneath the lower pair of lips 55, with its edges engaging and fitting the sharp acute angles of the lower slot. In this way a double fastening is afforded for the tongue, and the end of the tongue is at the same time tucked under out of the Way and in this manner disposed of.
It is evident that slight changes might be I resorted to in the arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 1. A paper-bag fastener, consisting of a paper or cardboard blank having a pair of open slots therein, the body of said blank secured to the surface of. the-bag with the portion free in which the outer ends of the slots are located, in connection with a tongue secured to the opposite surface of the bag-mouth and passed through the two slots wherein it is held by the frictional engagement of its edges with the ends of the slots.
7 2. A paper-bag fastener, consisting of a tongue, and a blank having open slots in its ends, said slots having sharp angles at their outer edges adapted to receive the edges of the tongue and. hold them by frictional engagement.
3. The combination with a tongue having a slight taper, said tongue adapted to be secured to one side of abagat or nearits mouth, of a blank secured to the opposite side of the bag, said blank having an open slot at each end, the outer angles of which slot are sharp Ivided with'a pairof slots approximately trianor acute, they being adapted to receive and hold the edges of the tongue by frictional enone slot and then the other.
gagement. v In testimony whereof I have signed this 4. A bag or envelop having a tapering l specification in thepresence of two subscribtongue on its flap, and a fastening device on iug witnesses, the body portion, saidfastening device pro- SAMUEL S. SMITH.
