Description

FRA/NCIS PIDJEON, OF SAUGERTIES, NEW *YORK- Letters Patent No. 70,606, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVBD RAIL-CLAMP JOINT.
A dlgs ttlhnle 'refresh tu in tttse'tetters atmt aut mating part nf -tige am.
To ALL WHoM 1T MAY CoNoERN.
Be it known that I, FRANCIS PIDJEoN, of Saugerties, in the county of Ulster, and State of New York, have i invented a new and improved Rail-Joint Clamp; and I do li'ereby declare that the followingis a, full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the lart to make -and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists, first, in a dove-tail-shaped clamp, thereby dispensing with all bolts, and allowing the rail to contract or expand by heat or cold; second, in bringing the weight of the-train, when passing over the joint to and upon theat bottom to theril, b'ycarrying the clamp upon the outside oi' the rail up even with the top ofthe rail; third, in forming the rail with aat bottom-piece, for thepurpose of taking the bearing in a better manner than with the ordinary form of' rail; fourth, in giving adove-tailf shape to the rails at and near each end, to receive a dove-tail-shaped clamp. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved rail-joint clamp, &c., is illustratedp Figure 1 being a plan or top view of the same, and
Figure 2 a transverse vertical section, taken`in the plane of the line :c z, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. l
A, in the drawings, represents the two ends contiguous to eachother of rails BJ These rails are made with hat bottom-pieces C, and at their contiguous ends, where to be jointed, are made dove-tail-shaped at E, so as to receive the dove-tailed-shaped sides F of the two portions Gr and H to the clamp for the' joint, ofwhichclamp G is the outside portion, and is extended up to and on a. level with the'surface of the railsB.
By the construction of the rail and clamp described above in detail, it is plainly obvious all the objects herein previously stated are secured, and in a most effectual and practical manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and 'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the dove-tai1ed rails Eend dove-tailed clamps G H, substantially as described, for the purpose specified. v
2. In combination with the above, therouter section of' the clamp flush with the head of the rail, substantially as described, for the purpose speciied. v
