To all wwnt it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELAM E. ROOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinVehicle-WheelSpindles and Bearing-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable 1o others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make andv use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in a vehicle-wheel spindle and bearing-box of Jthat class in which the box is secured in axial position to the hub between the front and rear end points ot' impact and in which the box is revolubly secured to the spindle by a divided ring or adjusting screw in its rear end and against a shoulderA ofV the spindle, said 2o divided screwbeing locked in place bya ring screw thereon and against the rear end of the box.
The object of the invention is the production of a vehicle-wheel spindle and box simple in construction, effective in use, readily 3o spindle-nut.
The elements of the invention will severally and at large appear in the following description, and they will be severally or coinbinedly pointed out or set forth in the appended claims.
The purposes of the invention are attained .by the mechanism, devices, and meansillustrated in the accompanying drawings, similar referenceY characters designating like parts 4o throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal Vertical central section of a vehicle-wheel hub, showing the elements of the invention in position, the Vspindle appearing in full side elevation.. with the rear end dust-shield omitted in Fig. 3. Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively an inverted plan and a full side elevation of the box-securing nut detached from-Fig. 1. Figs. 6 and 5o 7 are completed anddetached end elevations of the box. Figs. 8 and 9 are full end elevations, detached, of the spindle. In lthe axis of a hub l, supporting Spokes 2 and having rear and front end hub-bands, (designated,respectively, by3 and 4,) is seated a bearing-box A, havinga rearwardly-widening portion a, with an outwardly-sloping conical portion ct' and a rear end cylindrical portion ctsaid latter portion havinginteriorly a screw-thread a5 extending a prescribed distance forward from its rear end and exteriorly a prescribed thickened portion a4, with longitudinal ribs a5 extending to the slope of the conical portion', which is thickened, as shown, while the forward end of the box beyond the hub end has an external screwthread a6, onto which is irmly screwed home -a nut AQ having a flanged ring base d? to engage against the forward end of the hub, and the nut is interiorly hollowed out, forming an oil-storing chamber as, with a central opening a9 through its head-wall admitting the oil. The rear end thickenedportion a4, with the forward surface of the conical portion a. and the contact-surface of the screw-base o7, constitute the points of impact between which said hub and box are bound firmly together,

Seated in the box A is anv axle-Spindle B, with its portion Z) fitting the box'portion a, its conical portion b the box portion a', its prescribed cylindrical portion b2 the box portion o2 to a prescribed extent, where is formed an abrupt shoulder b3, andthe spindle diametrically reduced, forming a prescribed cylindrical portion b4,'having a diameter equal to the diagonal extent of the' square axle por tion b5, adapted to be welded to an axle-body well known to the trade" in the construction of vehicles using such spindles, while in the top of the portion b is an oiling-groove be, extending to the base of the conical portion 19'; but this groove may be extended up the Slope of said conical portion and over the cylindrical portion b2 to the abrupt shoulder b3, as indicated by dotted linesb.
On the portion b4 is sleeved a ring screw C, with an external screw-thread c engaging the thread aS of the box and being screwed home therein and against the shoulder b3 serves to lsecure the spindle and box together as well as to' take up the lost motion that may occur IOO between the contact-surfaces of the spindle and box and to adjust the contact-surfaces between their conicalportions. In order that said screw may be placed in position on said portion b4, it is diametrically divided by longitudinal cuts c' into sections o2 c3, the section c2 having transverse notches c4 in said cuts and the section c3 projections c5 to engage in said notches, holding said sections together and the thread c continuous, while in the rearward edges of the sections are orifices c6, to be engaged by the points of a pinwrench (not shown) in turning or rotating said screw.
To loci; or securely hold the screw O in place after being screwed home in adjusting, a. ring screw D, having a screw-thread d in its inner face and orifices di d in its rearward end edge, is screwed home on said screw C, with its forward end edge d2 seated firmly against the rearward end edge of the box, with the thread d engaging on the thread c and the orifices d serving to be engaged by the points of a pinwrench in turning said screw D home.
A washer or collar E maybe applied to the rear end of the hub, as shown, and secured thereto in any approved manner, which washer, together with the nut A', making the joint between the spindle, box, and hub to be practically dust-proof.
Now the several parts hereinbefore described and occupying the respective positions indicatedin the drawings, the following observations will be noted: first, that by reason of the body of the hub being between the points of impact of the portion a4 with the conical slope a and the flange-surface a7 of the nut A' the hub and box are lengthwise rigidly secured; second, that by reason of the ribs a5 engaging in the body of the hub the two are revolubly secured together; third, that the convex surface b' contacting with theconcave surface a' and the forward end edge of the screw C engaging against the shoulder b3 securely holds the wheel to the spindle without the usual axle-nut; fourth, that the screw C with its forward end edge engaging against the shoulder b3 serves to adjust the spindle in the box, taking up lost motion endwise thereof without washering; fifth, that the screw C, being divided by the cuts c', may be placed in position on the portion b4 after joining the spindle to the axle-body; sixth, that the lugs c5, engaging in the notches c4, serve to hold the sections c2 c3 securely in place, preserving the continuity of the thread c; seventh, that the screw D on the screw C being firmly screwed home against the rear end of the box securely locks said screw C in place; eighth, that the chamber ai within the nut A serves to carry a supply ofoil for automatic or self lubrication; ninth, that the orifice a serves to admit oil, and, tenth, that the groove be aids in g said lubrication.
The invention having been thus ascertained and described and the manner in which it is performed fully shown and set forth, what is considered new, and desired to be secured by Letters Batent, is-
l. The combination in a vehicle-wheel spindle and bearing, with the box, A, `having the rearwardly widening portion, a, the outwardly-sloping conical portion, a', with the thickened wall, and the rearwardly-extending cylindrical portion, a2, having the internal screw-thread, a3, with means provided for securing it axially to a'wheel-hub, of the spindle, B, seated in said box, said spindle having the rearwardly-widening portion, b, the outwardly-sloping conical portion, Z9', the rearwardly-extending cylindrical portion, b2, having the abrupt shoulder, b3, and the cylindrical portion, h4, having the angular rear end portion, b5, with means provided, such as a divided screw, to revolubly hold said spindle in place, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination in a vehicle-wheel spindle and bearing, with the box, A, as described, axially secured to a wheel-hub as shown, and the spindle, B, as described, seated in said box as shown, said box having the internal screw-thread, a3, and said spindle having the abrupt shoulder, b3, with the cylindrical portion, h4, of the divided screw, C, with the external screw-thread, c, sleeved on said portion b, screwed into said box and against said shoulder, b3, substantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
3. In a vehicle spindle and bearing with the box, A, as described, axially secured to a wheel-hub as shown, and the spindle, B, as described, seated in the box as shown; said box having the internal screw-thread, a3, and said spindle the abrupt shoulder, b3, with the cylindrical portion, b4; the divided screw, C, with the external screw-thread, c, sleeved on said portion, b4, screwed into said box and against said shoulder, be; said screw, C, having the diametrical longitudinal cuts, c, making the sections, c2 c3, with the notches, c4, and the projections, c5, engaging said notches, and with means provided to lock said screw, C, in place; all substantially as described andV for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
4. lIn a vehiclewheel spindle and bearing, with a hub, l, having the box, A, as described, axially secured into said hub, the spindle, B, as described journaled in said box, and the screw, C, as described screwed thereinto and against the shoulder, b3; the ring screw, D, with the internal screw-thread,d, screwed onto said screw, C, and against the rear end of said box, substantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
